He's going to go back to fighting once a year like he's been doing since he won the WBO title back in the day.

His activity level is going to drop off and it shows by him not taking another fight this year ... he had the chance to win fighter of the year by facing another quality opponent and that wouldve raised him to star status ... maybe if he avenges his loss to Paul Williams combined with his wins over Cintron and Cotto ... then he coulda possibly been a PPV headliner some time next year.

He really needs to rematch Williams for his old belt. If he wins, he gets redemption. If he loses again, nobody can accuse him of ducking and he can fight Cotto in a big $$$ rematch.

I don't think Cotto can win given the way that he lost the first fight ...

Last I heard, Margo was suppose to be rematching Clottey in November, but I dunno' if thats still on.. and then there were talks of a Margo/Cotto rematch in early 2009.. I doubt he'll only fight once a year tho..

I am a bit disappointed in his choice.

I think Margarito has shown he is authentic top class. He just ****s himself over by not staying active enough. All his recent bad outtings were because he was off 6 months if not a year. For a guy with his style and limitations, being off that long is BAD.

He should logically have a maximum of 4 months off at his age. If he drops another decision I'm gonna say right now it is his own fault. 6 months to a year off is inexcuseable for a fighter at this level.

Give it up! Even if he doesnt fight until Jan or Feb, that will be 3 fights in less than a years time!:D:D Go find another like "Paul Williams" to hate on!

No its Bob Arums fault, he wants to cash in and that is why we don't always get the fights we want. We were lucky to get the Cotto Margo fight.

I think he made a good decision. He took some hard shots against Cotto. Fighting a rough guy like Clottey 4 months later could be trouble. They'll put him in with a soft touch in early 2009, and he'll be good to go.

Not just against Cotto, but against Cintron too. Even though he won nearly every round, he still ate dozens of flush shots from the biggest puncher in the division. The man deserves a rest.

Didn't Bob Arum already say that both Margarito and Cotto will headline a card this year against decent opponents and if both win a rematch is on early next year?

Yeah, early next year. The plan is to have a split site double header, with Margarito fighting on the west coast and Cotto in Puerto Rico. Arum says if they don't both fight on the same card, then Clottey would be in the co-feature to one of the bouts. The rumored opponents for Cotto were Jesus Soto-Karass and Sebastian Lujan.

Pretty good, but next year?, why?. I can understand for Cotto but not Margarito. If he goes for that next year then he's already planned two fights next year, meaning a possible rematch with Williams is off the table next year as well if he beats both guys he's set to fight.

Taking hard shots is an excuse for being off 4 months. No more than that unless you took some serious damage like a ruptured disc or fractures. He had no real visible damage besides swelling. All that goes away within the first month.

I'm talking about being sharp. When you are off beyond those 4 months you start losing your edge. Taking a soft touch inbetween does help as it keeps your edge. As long as it isn't consistently one right after another. That's when you fall into an expected rythmn and start regressing.

The reason he beat Cotto is because he stayed busy through 2008 up to that point. The fights with Johnson and Cintron no doubt paved the way for that big win. In some other situations Margarito has fought quality opponents (where he didn't prepare well) and he looked like ****.

Now if they do take a soft touch or some medicore competition for jan he may be ok. But that is really stretching it. By january he'll be off a full 6 months. I can see him being off that long then coming in looking like **** against a guy he should beat easily. It could happen so why fan those flames?

Somebody said recently on another thread how people put 'Strap' instead of 'title' to subtly downgrade and lessen a fighter and his position, and to strengthen their point.
    Its very true.
If it was one your fave fighters you wouldnt have put the throwaway, cheap sounding 'strap' in the title would you Fitz?
Margo won a world title against an elite fighter, not a mere 'strap'.
    Off topic,but true.
