I had favored Pavlik, but I am leaning towards Williams. I don't know if Pavlik has "mentally" recovered from his loss to Hopkins, and the off the ring distractions with all the rumors/stories makes me wonder how mentally sharp he'll be. It should be a great fight nonetheless-I am a fan of both.
Williams is gonna knock "The Ghost" out late.. no problem. People like to say Cotto's pscyhe was ruined by Margarito and his brick laying gloves... but what about Kelly? Getting your ass torn out the frame by an old man (albeit a hall of fame p4p'er) has to damage his confidence. Kelly gonna go to sleep for atleast 10 seconds... so he better bring his favorite pillow from home
Williams doesn't the experience or craftmanship to stay outside and box. He'll get dragged into a mid-range fight and he won't be able to take Pavlik's combination punching and power. Pavlik TKO9/10.
Williams is too fast and too skilled ... I think Pavlik will do his normal thing, throw alot of punches, come forward, and expect to land that right hand. I expect Williams to give him angles, match him in punch output, and outwork him down the stretch. Pavlik will throw to the body, but I don't think they're going to be in close quarters that often (I may be wrong) but with that being said ... Williams controls the tempo of the fight ... Pavlik can't fight going backwards and he can't defend more than 2-3 punches at a time ... Williams will be in, throw 10 in a sequence, and then dip out to the side ... I also think that since there's a big difference in speed, that Williams will commit more to his power punches. I expect a late rounds stoppage ... the key to beating Kelly Pavlik is to take away the jab ... Hopkins did it and he was ineffective for the whole fight ... his right hand is very strong but he can't get it off without the jab. His movement isn't good enough to throw lead left hooks or right hands ... he needs to set everything up with the jab.
No middleweight has ever seen the 10th round against Pavlik. There is a chance Williams can be the first to do that, but only if he fights a really smart fight.
Great post ... I thought about this as well ... I sorta mentioned it in a previous post ... it'll be interesting to see because Williams did get drug into a close quarters fight against Margarito, but he had already won a majority of the rounds and at that time Margarito needed atleast a knockdown. In addition to that ... I have yet to see Williams lose steam ... he seems to fight the same pace from the opening bell to the closing bell.
Williams isn't all that quick. The reason Hopkins beat Pavlik was because he kept the fight inside or outside, not at mid-range which is where Pavlik is perfectly placed to get his punches off. Since when does Williams keep out of mid-range quarters? I just don't think he will cope with the occassion, I think he'll get drawn into a war and Pavlik will always win in that respect, in my opinion. I respect your points though, IF Williams keeps it outside or in doing what Hopkins did and lands and move out from mid-range quarters, he can definately take a decision.
Williams has atleast a 3" reach advantage if not more on Pavlik ... and he's a bit faster than most give him credit for ... He's a ton faster than Pavlik ... Its a matter of boxing and athleticism ... Pavlik is good and he works hard but I don't think he has natural atheleticism like other fighters and he doesn't have much of a rhythm to his fight game ... he's really just lanky ... come forward ... and very stiff. Defensively Pavlik isn't taking away any weapons ... and he's getting hit alot more than he should ... he can get discouraged if he can't hurt you ... and he doesn't know how to box well against a boxer ... thats why he's only fought 2 ... he was lucky to knock taylor out in the first fight but was truly exposed during the second fight ... and we all know what happened against BHop. For Pavlik to be successful ... he would have to fight in close quarters and he would have to fight a guy who's going to either come straight forward or not use angles.
I think this fight will be a classic with Paul Williams getting the better of the earlier exchanges, and looking the better fighter of the 2. I just think Kelly Pavlik will be too heavy handed for him and the punches Kelly does land will start to take their toll on Williams later on in the fight. Im going for a Pavlik late stoppage around the 11th.
