That's a good question. ONe which will surely have different answers. IMHO, he'll be remembered as the youngest JrMW champ ever, and one who took 4 HOFers (Ike, Winky, Tito, DLH) in their prime to the brink, win or lose. A fighter who fought with his heart on his sleeve, peaked early but eventually fizzled out like a super nova. I was kinda 50-50 on whether he should be in the HOF. Thought he didn't really do enough, but I think with more thought, he makes it. And Kirk, if you read this, sorry I didn't get back with you on that. :thumbsup
very good..but fell JUST short of greatness. only problem was that he had to meet Felix Trinidad in his prime.
i loved watching vargas fight. to me his legacy will be one similar to a mickey ward or an arturo gatti. osmeone who may not be totally top flight as a fighter but once he steps through those ropes will give everyone who paid to watch him everything he has in him to make try and give them their moneys worth. he may not have been perfect and he had weight problems no one denies that, but he was fun to watch most of the time
He is a tough prideful son of a ***** that would never say no to any challenge on the face of the planet. Vargas Mosley and Trinidad followed the same code and that was to fight all comers no matter what your fate will be. Vargas is the prime example of someone who had the skills to potentially ****** around making money and hyping up his name but he didn't and instead he took the demon of a Prime Trinidad head on and fought like a man when he was a very young fighter. He got his ass beat a lot but he fought with blood and guts in every fight and he helped carry this sport in the 90s. I'm not even a big fan of Vargas, In fact I was rooting that Trinidad decapitated his head off when they fought, But this guy was GREAT for the sport of boxing.
Vargas fell just short of greatness because, unlike too many of his contemporaries, he dared to be great. He fought legit HOF'ers in their prime and didn't wait for the right moment to pounce on them (after a loss, long layoff, injury, bad showing, etc) Burned fast, but burned bright. If up to me, he'd be in the HOF.
Man no way. Vargas was one of the best skilled, schooled, all round fighters in the world in his prime. Ward and Gatti were always glorified club fighters who provided great entertainment. FV is levels above those guys.
all i said was that he was similar to those fighters in respect to the fact that he fought his ass off and never refused a fight. i know he was much better skilled than ward or gatti as does most of the boxing world
I could never forget Sugar Shane. I just see those 4 as more a part of his legacy then the Mosley fight.
He deserves all the credit he's getting on this thread. He fought some great fighters, no questions asked, no games. It's impossible not to respect that in a fighter. He also beat Winky, Quartey, and a still game Castillejo (albeit both were past their best, Castillejo went on to upset Sturm 1 year later). I think he'll get in the HoF.
