The SMW division wasn't stacked when Ward was there, but after he'd accomplished all he could, he moved up for a fresh challenge. Whereas Joe spent 14 years in the division where he starved himself to make weight, to defend a lightly regarded title against B and C class fighters on a regular basis.

You say LHW was weak when Johnson beat Tarver, yet at that point, Kessler and Lacy hadn't done anything noteworthy, and Joe was fighting the Mkrtchyan's of the world.

What about in the early 00's, when he knew Ottke wouldn't fight him? The LHW division contained the following guys: Roy, Tarver, Harding, R Johnson, G Johnson, Griffin, Erdei, Dariusz M, Woods and Gonzalez. They were recognisable names. Who did Joe fight? Pudwell, Veit, Mitchell, Brewer and Salem etc.

What about the previous 10 plus years? Added to the names listed above, were the likes of Hill and Nunn. There's no comparison between the 2 divisions, and the list of guys he could have targeted, compared to the guys he fought. He had no ambition. He was fighting guys like Salem even in his 30's. Do you seriously think that he would have moved up to fight a guy like Kovalev had he have been in Ward's position? He was happy to be fighting guys like Manfredo.

Hopkins was clearly 'past it' more than a decade before the fight using your amazing logic.

 

Timing doesn't always beat speed. Calzaghe's speed was freakinsh, Ward's timing isn't. Ward isn't Mayweather when it comes to timing. I mean Froch ran him pretty close.

The WBO has had great fighters fighting for their titles over the years. However, they were a laughing stock in the early 00's, and some of Joe's opposition was awful for a man of his talents.

The fact that he was happy to fight all of the guys he did, speaks volumes.

Back then, the WBO had no respect amongst knowledgeable fans, respected journalists, or publications like Ring magazine.

The Ring didn't recognise them, and the belt wasn't needed in order to be classed as an undisputed champion.
