I would be interested to know how the number of boxers has changed in the USA over the decades. Unfortunately, I think boxing has become more of a marginal sport these days. For example, Deontay Wilder wanted to be a basketball or football player first. I heard that earlier in the 1920s or 1930s boxing was much more popular as a sport. The title of world boxing champion was the greatest for many young athletes. I once heard an interview with boxing historian Mike Silver, in which he described changes over the decades. However, I can't remember it very well because it was a while ago. He said e.g., that there used to be a lot more boxing gyms, before WW2. Then the general prosperity of the population increased and fewer and fewer wanted to pursue the tough career of a boxer. Boxing also became more centralized through television, which had negative effects on boxing talents at the local level ...
On the other hand, the total population was obviously smaller in the past. For example, the total population of the United States in 1935 was about 127 million people. There are currently approximately 328 million Americans. The composition of the population has also changed (more Hispanics, etc.).
Roughly said, boxing is more global now than it was in the past. However, the United States are the most successful professional boxing nation of all time, especially in the higher weight classes.
A few numbers, that I have from boxrec about professional boxers in different weight classes (pretty meaningless, just gives a very rough overview)-
    - Active American boxers at HW, CW, LHW, SMW, MW, SWW, WW, SLW: 279, 168, 130, 200, 212, 236, 379, 264
    - Total number of American boxers (active and inactive) at HW, LHW, MW, WW: 20063, 12598, 27271, 37537

I am interested in this topic because of the permanent discussion of old boxing/boxers vs. modern boxing/boxers.
So, it would be interesting to know, how the total number of boxers has changed over time, and therefore also the possible number of great talents. Of course, the living and development conditions have also changed for boxers over time, but I think really great talents would prevail at all times. But this discussion would go too far for now. I would be interested about other ideas, thoughts, insights or statistics about the development of the sheer number of boxers from the past to the present?

There were undoubtably many, many more American boxers back in the 20's and 30's than today. Even many more than can be found in the BoxRec database - as it's likely, that only a fraction of the fights back then have been reported.

According to BoxRec there were, worldwide, approx. 30,000 active boxers in 1930 (as against little over 23,000 in 2018)... but the true number could have been several times higher than that. How much higher is anybody's guess. We just don't know!

Just curious, is there a quick link you can post that shows the total active boxers in a given era/year?
