Tyson.

He came along and unified the titles in a short time. And there wasn't anybody he was not failing to sign a contract to fight. Plus, if you subtract the 70's results from Holmes, it subtracts substantially from his reign.

If we're only looking at who should rate higher in the 80's and not their WHOLE careers collectively, then Mike Tyson takes the award.

Tyson's record in the 80's was 37-0

Holmes record in that decade was 16-3

Tyson unified all the belts

Holmes didn't

Tyson flattened an entire division

Holmes left behind challengers who were never matched

Tyson's wins over Spinks, Thomas and Tucker are arguably better than any or at least most of the wins Holmes got in the 80's.

Tyson exited the decade without a loss, whereas Holmes had 3 of them ( albeit past prime )

Tyson would always beat Holmes in a not too dissimilar manner to that with which he demolished him in 88

 

People often forget that the same old man Holmes continued his career years after the Tyson loss and beat very very good fighters while Tyson was incarcerated.

Tyson never gets the props for demolishing Holmes like he did.

Also, Tyson was arguably the fighter of the decade in the 80's.
