He also beat Buster Douglas who dethroned Tyson. Tucker never lost to Light Heavyweight either, Holmes did twice.

All time I have Holmes at #4, while I have Tyson somewhere around #6 or #7... Larry's accomplishments outside of the 80's don't weigh into the discussion however.

I rate Holmes higher overall but if we are just doing the 80s then you have to give the clear edge to Mike Tyson.

He is still the last heavyweight to unify all the belts individually and then took it a step further by beating the guys who had the belt before the guys he beat for the belt to ensure that there were no questions.

 

I always rated Larry above Mike since I think he could go to a level where Mike could not, yet Mike fought the same level Larry did ( the typical heavyweight contenders) and he seemed to be more dominant. I give it to Mike, yet I think Larry could dig down deeper. It doesn't make sense. Mike usually didn't have to dig down deep.

 

These two are my favorite heavyweights and the man who made the bigger impact in and out of the ring is undoubtedly Tyson.

Holmes is my 4th greatest heavyweight. Tyson on the other hand is around 11-13

 

Overall, Holmes is top 5 in muy ATG HW, Tyson is just 9-10

But for the proposed timeframe (80s) it is Tyson the one with a better resume

 

Tyson fought everyone, Holmes didn't. Tyson was just way better.

 

Holmes took that fight on short notice after being retired. prime Holmes survived Shavers bombs and Tyson wasnt half the hitter that Shavers was. Tyson was a 5 round KO artist. Prime Holmes survives the early attacks and jabs jabs jabs. Holmes right hand puts Tyson down and out late.

 

Tyson's 86-89 owns Holmes' entire reign, let alone the eighties.
