I usually have me tea. Unless you're really scratching around at the margins of performance it doesn't matter whether you have a banana or some chicken, veg and mash.

If adding just a protein shake to your diet caused you to gain weight, you must not eat much at all. That's about 100 calories, 35 protein shakes to add 1 pound of mass, that is if all those calories went straight to muscle or fat.

I'm guessing it wasn't just a protein shake which caused your weight gain...

Straight after training you should be taking in some form of carbohydrate to replenish your glycogen stores, alot of sports nutritionist say that its best to take some high GI type of carbs (like pure sugar) but I think its ok to eat a piece of fruit or two instead.

Your post training dinner should have a good mix of protein and low GI carbs, protein to help your body recover better, and low GI carbs to keep your energy levels steady.

Personally I bring a bunch of fruit with me to the gym and eat it straight after training.
