http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more_sports/2008/10/04/2008-10-04_hbos_coverage_of_shane_mosleyvictor_cont.html One of the trademarks of HBO Sports’ long-running “World Championship Boxing” series has been its willingness to tackle uncomfortable, awkward and newsworthy subjects even at the risk of igniting a feud with a prizefighter, promoter, or some other business partner. Last weekend, HBO showcased Mosley fighting Ricardo Mayorga in the main event of a live doubleheader from Carson, Calif. HBO’s signature, and highly opinionated “WCB” crew, Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward, turned this event into the Night of the Living Pom-Pom, spending much of the evening marveling over Mosley’s skill level and the way he handled Mayorga. Mosley continues to make news outside the ring, which the HBO voices were not inclined to reveal. Mosley has already filed a defamation lawsuit against Conte in California, withdrew it, and refiled it in New York. Conte was hoping to release a tell-all book, “BALCO: The Straight Dope on Barry Bonds, Marion Jones and What We Can Do To Save Sports,” last month. But a number of factors, including Mosley’s legal action, delayed the release. Conte has said that anecdotes proving Mosley used performance-enhancing drugs (Mosley has said he thought BALCO’s products were legal), will appear in the book. No secret that the HBO voices, who have chronicled Mosley’s pro career from the beginning, have a deep affinity for the charismatic boxer. Indeed, after Mayorga was counted out, Merchant, in an apparent state of euphoria, said: “Shane Mosley, I love you.” Steward: “This was his (Mosley’s) greatest moment.” Then, in the post-fight interview, Merchant asked Mosley: “Shane, you’re 37 years old. You’re not supposed to be fighting hard, strong guys like that for 12 rounds. How do you do it?” At that very moment we wondered how many viewers had their own idea what the answer to that question might be Was avoiding the Mosley/Conte story a mere glitch? Or new standard operating procedure.
Mosley is a drug cheat who gets a pass because of his friendly demeanor. I believe him as much as I do the other athletes who "didn't know" they were taking illegal performance enhancers when they injected it in their systems after flying across the state for these "supplements".
Look, Mosley does not get a pass for what he did, intentionally or not. But I believe he has left the juice alone, as he has failed no drug tests nor does he looked juiced up. In short, I believe in Shane Mosley. :good
Oh please. Now ok, I agree that Mosley has gotten a free pass on his steriod use compared to alot of other athletes. However, the NY Dailey is trying to use the above quotes as some kind of ass kissing by HBO on Mosley but it is taken out of context. I think they genuenly were excited by the KO at 2.59 of round 12. I was excited and Mosley isnt really one of my favorite fighters. I see nothing out of the ordinary as far as the above quotes go.
HBO is notorious for being biased and seeing just one-side of the fight, so the commentary didn't really surprise me. Steward getting caught up in the moment and saying it was Mosley's greatest moment (over beating DLH)??? Nothing new for him to get caught up in the moment or say some strange things. Steward also said the 3rd Gatti-Ward fight was better than the first fight. He also claimed that DLH against Forbes looked as good as he did 10 years earlier, and that Shambra Mitchell was faster than Floyd Mayweather.
HBO does chearlead, but this was the wrong fight for the NY Daily news to point to as an exhibit...... Why the hell would HBO at this point question Mosely about Balco.....its old news already.
Very good stuff you pointed out there. You just reminded me what kind of an ass Steward can look like sometimes
manny is a terrible annoucer and a even worse trainer these days he did no help for jermain taylor in fact i think taylor looked bad in every fight where manny trained him he looked better in the second fight with pavlik and he did very little for kermit cintron he couldnt do for himself andy lee was beatin by brain vera wlad is his only fighter that is even remotley impressive and hes only okay in my opinion its just heavyweights suck
In a lot of ways, Shane and my idol Greg Valentino are cut out of the same mold. Kudos to this great Newspaper for calling out the sometimes ridiculous HBO announcement crew.
Well that just goes to show that they don't know **** about boxing. In two Points: Steward had Mayorga winning the fight. Merchants "I love you" remark is not new: [yt]GWMn0CWH7Xo[/yt]
He claimed he was "misled" by Conte into injecting legal supplements. And? Yeah, he flew across the state and spent almost two thousand on what he thought were "legal supplements". :rofl
