Been boxing for about 15 mths, train 2-3 times a week (private lesson once a week and group lessons twice), and spar regularly. I live in Asia. Will be heading to NYC this weekend for 2 weeks on business. Would like to know if there are any gyms I can go to preferably in Manhattan where I could get individual coaching over that 2 wk period, I love boxing too much to miss 2 wks of it and also would like to take lessons from a different trainer for a change. Thanks for the help.
Can't say I know of any good ones in Manhattan. Outside of the usual suspects in BK, there's a new boxing gym that opened up on Queens Blvd right off the 33rd street station on the 7, about 10 minutes outside of Manhattan. I have no idea if it's any good though. Very close to midtown. Every time I've walked by, there are only a few people in there, so probably not too tough to get some individual training there. Gleason's Gym, which is probably the most famous one still open in the city, is also just one subway stop outside of Manhattan, if you're staying downtown. Probably a lot tougher to get individual attention there though.
if u have $ u can get training at any gym just depends how much ur willing to spend as a newcomer who does not know anyone expect to pay minimum 40$ an hr in manhattan and that does not include gym fee's
Thanks for the replies guys, will check it out. 40 US and above seems reasonable to me as here in Asia, they charge minimum 50 US/hr for private training. Read some of the old threads some mention Church street. Would love to check out Gleasons as well.
i suggest you go to gleasons forget church st i can speak to my trainer for you if you like.. NY Golden gloves champ, National golden gloves champ, WBO middleweight champ w 6 defences... he is in Midtown manhattan 26st 6ave at a decent gym with good facilities i think he would charge around $40 an hr but can't say for sure. let me know if ur interested and i'll give u his number.
i've trained at church st and at gleasons. the trainers at church st. aren't real boxing trainers. they are just there to help give you a boxing workout. nice gym though. gleason's trainers just try and get money off of you but dont really care about teaching you the sweet science. they charge too much from what i've heard from other boxers. I train in downtown Manhattan on Delancey st at a small gym called Nick's Fitness. Me and my coach teach mostly teens there but we have about 5 or 6 adults who train with us too. It's a great learning environment because there aren't other trainers there sneaking around trying to bite. Let me know if you're interested. First session is allways free.
Hey thanks for both replies, definitely interested. Will contact u guys when I get to NYC on Sunday morning, or just pass me the contacts thanks.
