Billy Smith is the only man on film duking it out with Charley Burley, of course, so this is the reason I am interested in this fight, but as a delightful bonus it's the walk-out fight for Rocky Marciano KO1 Joe Walcott. So we get the freshest possible reaction from a man sat i "row 1" who spends most of the short fight speculating as to what happened in the main event. Well worth a listen.

As for the fight itself, Smith looks disorgaised, but rugged and every inch the puncher of lore. The KO punch is almost noncholant, after belting Noble (who died in a plane crash shortly after) all over the ring. Watch for a furious Noble spinning Smith and punching him on the spine

All opinions and viewpoints on Smith are very welcome.

Well, there's only so much you can say about an early blowout by Billy Smith against a rather inept opponent. The commentary on Walcott-Marciano II was interesting but didn't offer much we don't already know.

Add Billy Smith vs Harold Johnson here and this will go atleast 3 page I'm sure. :good

Smith, like Bob Satterfield, was somewhat erratic but dangerous at his best. Burley took him to school but he was competitive with Moore and legitimately KO'd Harold Johnson in 2 rounds. Technically he isn't as amazing as the likes of Burley, Moore and Johnson but he would fit right into today's picture with his style.

What about the remark that "most fighters were picking Walcott". This is not something I have heard before.

Anyone know what the story was there?

I never heard that before either. Maybe they were trying to build up the fight or something. All the boxers I knew were picking Marciano to knock Walcott out faster than he did in the first fight. I remember that, in order to bet on Marciano, I had to give 3-1 odds or more.

Yes, it's a delightful little nugget, and re-inforces the idea of Walcott as a fighter's fighter, or, as you say, bumming the fight  Still,it's made me wonder, and i'd love to see a breakdown of who picked who.

Also, do you think this film rules out the notion that Walcott didn't hear the count? Or not?

You think Smith would fit in today, obviously it is a weak era but he looked a very limited fighter. he made things messy but was a massive puncher.

Well he's a very good bet against dudes like Cleverly and Murat and Diaconu, who are still at the ten at this weight, I believe.

But what's interesting is that he is probaly going to be boxing in the 168lb division were he fighting now. Guys like Andrade and Bika and Froch are not as going to extend Archie Moore or KO Harold Johnson...I think Billy Smith would make wonderous mess of that supposed flagship division. But no doubt, at some point, he would disgrace himself

He would be a solid fighter as he was in his day but not a spectacular fighter, he is going to get beat at some point and shown to be limited.

I don't see him being anything special today either but he could be a Glen Johnson type of fighter, winning some big ones and losing to the best. I think he was solid, nothing spectacular but I wouldn't say he was too limited either. He held his hands high for defense and jabbed consistently but couldn't compete with a master like Burley.

The 168 lb division would also fit him more than competing at 175 and occasionally heavyweight.

Fair enough TGA, I'm actually in the process of trying to find out what has happened to Billy Smith, I'm waiting on the Atlantic City library to get back to me.

I will need to wathc more tapes of him.
