I remember being at the WBHOF after party and asking some old timers who would win this match.. Among those there were Bert Sugar and Mando Muniz(since he fought Hedgemon).. Suprising matchup to ask these guys but the reason i had thought of this one was because, this was around the time Oba had the tough luck of fighting Tito,Oscar and Quartey all elite fighters. Although Carr was very competetive in every fight... WHich can also be said of Hedgemon Lewis although he had bigger wins beating Backus 2x splitting fights with Ernie Lopez,Shotgun Albarado, losing a close decision to Mando Muniz.. and also drawing with Palomino and gave Napoles all he wanted the first time losing, being kod in the rematch.... He ended his career getting stopped by Stracey. WHo wins these between these 2 Motown warriors? Oh yeah it was unanamous Muniz,Sugar, my friend Johnny Ortiz (former radio host) all picked Lewis. But Muniz fought him Sugar is partial to older fighters Johnny knew Lewis who trained and lived in LA. So it didnt suprise me that they would go with Lewis..... His resume does seem to be a little better but these guys remind me of eachhother Lewis was just the 70s version.
Lewis. He was a great boxer, just lacked the strength and durability which is why he lost to Ernie Lopez and Adolph Pruitt, strong pressure fighters. I was never too impressed with Oba Carr.
Having really watched much of LEwis besides a couple clips, but my dad watched alot of him and said he was an excellent fighter and fought a lot of tough competition.. Judging by the records id go with Hedgemon, but i saw plenty of OBA and i just think he was unfortunate to have fought in an era with so many great champs at welter.
