After Manny lost to Tim Bradley in a very controversial decision he said he had no problem with the judge's decision but he somehow thinks he won against Mayweather despite being completely schooled? And now we have a veritable pile up of excuses. Unbelievable.

I have watched the fight together with 3 friends, all of us boxing experts, and all of us scoring the fight round by round. We're neither US citizens or Filipinos, and neither fans of Pacquiao or Floyd either. 3 of us (including me) had Pacquiao winning it by the slightest of margins (1 single point, with 1 round even), and one had Mayweather ahead by 1 round. It was certainly a difficult fight to score because there were many close rounds, I guess this is a fight that could have gone either way, depending on how you score fights. The official scorecards were ridiculous - the only explanation for these cards can be that all the close rounds were automatically scored for Mayweather. Still, 118-110 seems biased.

But I can see very well why a lot of people scored it for Mayweather. This was clearly a 'Mayweather' fight, and not a Pacquiao type of fight. Mayweather imposed his style of fighting, he was in total control for large stretches of the fight and he kept it in the middle of the ring for the most part. There is, however, one important factor that takes away a lot from his performance: he totally neglected his offense. His defense was as effective as it possibly could be (it wasn't brilliant though, a lot of his defense consisted of holding and running, but it was undeniably effective), but where was the offense? I have never seen such a low punch output from Mayweather. You could clearly see that he was hesitant to throw, he was nervous (that's also why he wasn't as accurate as he used to when throwing), and, in lack of a better word, he was 'scared'. He was afraid to get countered by Pacquiao, whose handspeed matched his own. And at the same time, Mayweather didn't counter himself, like he usually does - the few punches he landed clearly were nearly all jabs and right hand leads. Boxing is about 'hit without getting hit', and Mayweather neglected the first in favour of the latter. How can you win rounds without throwing punches? An argument can be made that Mayweather won the fight based on his ring generalship though. On a side-note, Floyds legs looked fine and he definitely had the edge when it comes to foot-speed.

Pacquiaos performance was very disappointing. Be it because of a shoulder injury or because he simply has slipped too much these last years, this was only a shadow of the Pacquaio of 5 years ago... he was never able to take control of the fight, he only had moments. You could clearly see that he tried, but his efforts were nullified by Mayweather (unfortunately too often by holding). At the end of the day however, Pacquiao didn't get hit much, simply because Mayweather didn't throw punches. And that is an important point. None of the two landed many clean shots, but I thought that Pacquiao still outworked and outhustled Mayweather in some rounds. Pacquiaos aggression wasn't effective, but when you've got two fighters who don't land punches, for whatever reason, the round should be scored in favour of the fighter who 'did more work', meaning who threw more. And in many rounds, that fighter was Pacquiao. Of course Pacquiao should still have done more, but maybe he did just enough to deserve the nod, or a draw.

I feel that, even though he officially won, Mayweather gave this fight away in a sense. I believe he showed that he is the better fighter, at any rate he is the much fresher fighter, and he could have won this in a dominant fashion - if he only wanted to. As it stands, he showed Pacquiao way too much respect and solely concentrated on his defense, bordering on going into survival mode at times. And there lies an argument why Pacquiao might have deserved the nod by a tiny little bit, despite an overall poor performance.
