Obie Walker, one of the last "colored" heavyweight champions from the 1930s, was, insofar as I know, never stopped or even floored in over 80 professional fights, and he foughts guys like Tony Galento, George Godfrey, and a young Elmer Ray (six times).
Nah, wasn't Felix Savon waxing about how great his chin was too? We're talking about the guy that did nuke Tua out of there in.. what.. a round?
Ralph 'Tiger' Jones. Stopped only once in 89 contests, and that was the result of a bad cut he sustained in the first round. He absorbed Ray Robinson's punches without blinking, en route to winning a decision over him.
MDW Conteh - I must Echo on Kevin Finnegan, Whenm the thunderous Punching Gretian Tonna put him down (Bundled against the ropes) no only did Kevin get up Immediately - He proceeded to Punch Tonna around the ring, he also suffered a broken jaw against Frank Rechie - but still went the distence - Kevin..along with Brothe Chris were Capital Tough !
Good stuff. I'd love to have seen his first fight with Hagler, I posted the Boxing News report on here a while back. Finnegan was totally busted up and came on to go toe-to-toe with Marv winning rounds 6,7 and 8 before a bad laceration on his cheek forced Mickey Duff (I think) to call it off with the cards about even- and Kevin could barely break an egg with his punches. What a warrior. The only fights I have of his are Minter II, which I thought he edged, and Sibson, whom he outboxed easily. :good
Hector "Macho" Camacho. Not that the guys on this forum don't realize it, but it is just not the first thing you think of when you bring up his name. You think first of the blazing hand speed of his prime, the ring costumes, the wild trunks, the flamboyancy, and unfortunately, the partying and drug use that prevented him from being a P4P all time great. But in spite of everything I mentioned, Camacho is a guy with a granite chin. Never knocked out in over 80 pro bouts, and was only down a couple times as well.
Tiger Ted Lowry, stopped 3 times in 144 fights one by Lee Q Murray who had 22 lbs on him, went the route twice with Marciano , a unique acheivment.
MDWConteh - Re Finnegan vs Hagler, yes indeed, i have the boxing news report somewhere, also The Ring Mag's Rings Around the world Advised the "Hagler had caught a Tarter" in Irish Kevin Finnegan, if not for the cuts it seems that there was a very good chance the Hard Charging Kevin could of Joined that early exclusive club of Boogaloo and the Worm Given Kevins horrendous Cuts in fight One, i always wondered why he took the return so very Quickly, it still seems a rather crazily short period considering his injuries ? Topping up the Guiness Fund perhaps ??
I've always though that mate. A crazy decision, made worse as Hagler opened up the cut almost immediately. I think he needed to dough for a new paint-set and easel. :hey
