Another thread about Joe Frazier got me thinking - somebody mentioned Mel Turnbow who Frazier faced and was floored by I think - and about how various top names sparred with him and said he was one of the hardest hitters they ever faced (George Foreman & Earnie Shavers both said this apparently) - always interested to hear abou the obscure guys who might not neccersarily have been world class fighters as such, but were never forgotten by the great fighters they did fight for being hellacious punchers - come on classic let me know about any you can mention - quotes from the greats they mixed with would be good too :good

I was thinking of L.C Morgan but I wouldn't call him a 'hellacious puncher'.

Paul Andrews, he self-destructed on booze, but he could punch a ton. Cus D'Amato wouldn't let him anywhere near Patterson in the gym.

Damn right Moreno could punch, b, but he sure-as-hell wasn't "obscure".

The Black Flash from Manchester, Pat Barrett. His story is one worth reading up on as well. There's a good documentary of him up on Youtube, actually. Hellacious puncher whose talent was squandered by a general lack of interest. His heart just wasn't in the right place.

There was an Australian Bantamweight and Featherweight champion in the 1950's called Elley Bennett who could punch like sledge hammer.

An Aboriginal,Bennett was an average boxer but was super dangerous as he not only hit hard but carried his power late.

He won the Featherweight title against a tough as nails fighter called Ray "Mustard" Coleman. After being outclassed for 14 rounds he turned the tables in the last scoring a clean KO to post an improbable victory. The rematch was a carbon copy with Bennett again coming from behind to score a last gasp 15th round stoppage.

    A truly forgotten big puncher.
