before we start this isnt a floyd mayweather bashing session but for real discussion....

    anyways

as long as ive been watching floyd mayweather fight... (since gatti)
i always felt that he was smaller than most of the fighters he faces

so the other day i looked over his record from start to finish...
floyd fought pretty much all of his fights around 130 ... cept pretty much towards the end of his career... last 6-7 fights maybe

all of cotto's fights were around 140 but cotto at his best is 145 clearly

marg fought around 147 most of his career and sometimes above

shane spent half his career slightly above 135 and the other half at 147

all im saying is floyd @ welterweight is always fighting someone larger than him which makes for a more daunting challenge....

this isnt to support or discourage floyds action.... but im just curious as to why no one really mentions this that often

This gets mentioned all the time actually.

    5 division champ etc etc.

his prime was at 130, and he was really a great fighter there. since his move up to 135 he just hasn't been the same, because of the size challenges you are mentioning. at 140 i feel he really took the time to settle in and

Floyd is all about the money and the bigger paydays were at the higher weights, which is why he moved up

at 140, 147 and 154, Floyd was very smart about the way he moved up

whenever i look at these threads with all the mayweather hate... nobody really mentions that he usually is fighting people way bigger than him when reasoning why he doesnt fight the whole welterweight division....

thats cause until he retired, Floyd was the Welterweight champ. regardless of how many divisions you move up, if you are making weight at 147, then you are technically on the same playing field as your opponents. and if you're gonna hold the title then be prepared to defend it

also since Floyd's style relies more on speed and skills than strength and power, he is not so out of his depth when he moves up multiple weights. Unlike for example Tito or Hatton.

Mayweather also doesn't cut a lot of weight, so he's usually smaller during the night of the fight. Corrales outweighing him 146-136, Castillo 147-138 both times, Baldomir 162-149, etc...

One time I was surprised how big he looked though was the Gatti fight. Most figured it was a mismatch, but one of the few arguments for Gatti was his size. Although Gatti started out smaller, he did that by cutting large amounts of weight, and was fighting @ 140 and above for 6 years when he fought Mayweather. He had weighed 160 on fight night against Gamache and looked bigger than a lot of his opponents. PBF had only fought 2x at 140, after having 4 title fights @ 135.

Then Mayweather looks just as big in the ring as Gatti, or even bigger.

Mayweather also looked bigger than Hatton IMO.

It is often mentioned that Mayweather was smaller than his advesary when he moved up past 135 or so.

His offense suffered greatly due to this, as he became less fluid with his combos.
