I understand what your saying and i agree on that fact..but i just felt Hagler was winning the middle rounds for me...a lot of Leonards work was flashy and yes it can be lovely to watch but i never think there was much substance behind it and i felt Marvin's work had more substance and also i really feel Leonard for me let the fight slip in middle rounds...but in saying that...he won so i must be wrong It was such a tight fight it's hard to moan at people unless they have a dumb score like 118-110. I don't think he did Blade..even Marvin says he never did enough to snatch title. I felt he came back into fight in championship rounds but didn't do enough in middle rounds. A lot of Leonards shots were making slapping noises and i think the judge that gave it to Marvin said that and thats why he went with Marvin.
I can see why you would score the fight for Hagler having watched it again, I now have it 7-5 for SRL but don't have a problem with Marvin getting it. But when I 1st watched the fight (and that's the view the judges get) I couldn't score it for Marvin. Yes Leonard may have "stolen" the rounds, but it convinced me on the night and that's what matters. I really don't think Leonard gets anywhere near enough credit for this win. All I hear is how Hagler was past his best etc etc....but people seem to forget that Leonard was coming off only having 1 fight in 5 years!!! And he looked awful in that!!! All Leonards wins seem to get criticised "Hearns was outboxing him", "Duran never trained", "Hagler was past prime"....I'm beginning to think there's a vendetta against him!!!
Every time I watch the fight I see the same thing. Leonard landed more clean punches and won more rounds. Leonard won, and deserved to win. Not liking the way he won is a different story. But Ray won just the same.
I agree, a lot of people (maybe also the judges?) were surprised at how well Leonard and therefore gave him some rounds which they may not have given him in second review. I thought Hagler did enough in the 12th to at least earn a draw. A win for leonard is pushing it a little bit as he ran and hold too much.
No offense, but I don't agree with this assessment at all.On the Classic Boxing Forum(where this thread belongs and has been discussed many times),many people say that it was one of the greatest performances and upsets ever.Of course that's crazy.I know that I personally have beaten this point to death, but the reality is that Leonard had been teasing Marvin and boxing fans in general for this fight at least 6 years leading up to it.First off,Leonard wanted nothing to do with Marvin until he was certain that Marvin was done, which he was and that's why Leonard finally challenged him.Secondly Marvin knew he was past it ,too, because it took him about 3 months to decide to take the fight and he retired after this for good.Thirdly,Leonard looked pretty which is what he did best besides charm and manipulate.Did he do enough to win the middleweight title that night?I don't believe that he deserved the decision and take the title away.He ran almost the whole fight, threw pretty flurries and ran and held some more.Hagler was the aggressor and his work was more substance than Leonard's was.I had Hagler winning by 7-5.Hagler was a bad bleeder in his career and didn't have a mark on his face after the fight because most of Leonard's flurries were blocked.Leonard conned a lot of people that night.
I think his sluggishness lost him it. Compared to his prime, he was slow in that fight, in terms of getting off, counter-punching, hand-speed and cutting off the ring. Leonard could pepper him and then get on his bike. He managed to win rounds just by getting inside for a few seconds and digging before Leonard tied him up, but on the outside Leonard was constantly beating him to the punch. I, too, had it for Leonard by a round.
I had it 114-114. Pretty good fight. Closely contested, suspenseful, good enough action. Both guys were past their best. Hagler had gotten slower and definitely more hittable as the years went by. He had been a very solid defensive fighter with his parrying abilites and head movement, but was increasingly easier to hit as he got older, as shown by the likes of Roldan and Mugabi. Leonard had fought just once in 5 years, was the smaller man, and also didn't have the same stamina. Sure he was moving and using his legs a lot, but he also did so against Duran in New Orleans, and this time against Hagler he seemed tired by round 5 or 6 and needed a 2nd wind. This is someone who finished the 15th round strong in Montreal after taking an absolute hammering to the body.
Leonard won the fight. I have no problem with a draw although i disagree, but marvin wasnt accurate enough, and his pressure wasnt effective enough. Leonard fought the perfect fight against Marvin. Both were past prime, who knows what would have happened if they were both prime.
