Totally agree with this. the first time i watched it i had it for leonard close but clear. in subsequent viewings i've had it for hagler close. i guess leonard looked good compared to expectations, while hagler looked slow and awful compared to expectations. i know it wouldn't have decided the fight, but how about that sequence where leonard was on the ropes exhausted and barely moving, while hagler missed about 6-7 shots TO THE BODY!
I thought the fight was a draw personally here's the rounds I gave to each fighter... Leonard rounds: 1,2,3,4,6,11. Hagler rounds: 5,7,8,9,10,12.
Let me add one more thing I thought every round I gave to each fighter was clear with the exception of round 6 which was a difficult round to score but I gave to Leonard because of the flurry he landed on Marvin towards the end of the round.
This was one of those fights that could have gone either way, it was so closely contested by both men. Ray Leonard was rusty and fighting above his natural weight, whereas the 12 round limit didn't favor Hagler, who was also showing signs of slowing down in his victory over John Mugabi. I felt Leonard won by a single round, but I can't agree with anyone crying robbery. That's ridiculous. All things considered, one of the greatest comebacks in Boxing History.
my score was 115-113 leonard ive scored it a few times once with HBO and others with gil clancy etc i always end up with 115-113 the best i could give hagler is a draw if im being generous.
I agree with every round except for the 3th which I gave to Hagler. So, I could see a draw also but I think Hagler did enough to retain his title. I gave the sixth round also to leaonard but it was close.
It's easier to hit a man who is coming toward you than it is to hit a man who is moving away from you. That's why judges are expected to take into consideration who the aggressor is. In other words, if Leonard lands 20 out of 30 punches while running away, and Hagler lands 12 out of 40 punches moving forward, the round should go to Hagler. I scored the fight for Hagler by 2 rounds. The classic moment is early on when Leonard winds up a shot and lands it right on Haglers balls. What a clown.
Those who say Hagler won usually use Hagler's argument "he never hurt me". If that was so, then why did Leonard back Hagler up several times when Hagler had him on the ropes and seemingly in trouble? Leonard won on ring intelligence, he landed more, Hagler may have never been hurt (but he also wasn't hurt by Hearns'right hand landing flush) but Hagler never capitalized on his advantages, Leonard did. I believe Hagler had a false, misleading sense of confidence, similar to Hopkins against Taylor or Calzaghe. He just assumed he would win anyway, a sense of entitlement rather than real confidence.
I did not see Leonard backing up Hagler at any point at all. Hagler did enough to at least earn a draw. Leonard fought a great fight that night, using every trick in the book, but he did not take the title but tried to steal the title with running, holding, showboating from the long term champ. IMO, Hagler would have OUTLASTED this guy in a 15 ROUND battle. Hagler was the better man.
He did back up Hagler several times, just when Hagler had him on the ropes, Leonard would flurry and Hagler just took the punches and moved backwards. It happened. Leonard landed more punches and excecuted his game plan better. I would have liked Hagler to win, but he didn't.
Question. Was Hagler on the downside of his career in this fight? I know the answer is yes but how far removed was he from his menacing prime? Did Mugabi's fight take something out of Hagler? Leonard watched that fight live and said he would fight Hagler after watching that fight right?
