I have noticed a lot of people on this site seem to give more credit for a fighter's punch resistance rather than his boxing skills e.g Roy Jones. Why is this?? Even although it is debatable whether 'glass jaws' are part of boxing or in fact due to just perfectly timed punches...
Fighters dont reach the elite level if they have a glass jaw. Saying that certain very good-great fighters had glass jaws is absurd to me. the term glass-jaw is almost as bad as calling reffering to certain fighters as bums. People that say things like that have either never boxed or just dont respect boxing or understand what it is to be a fighter. Some guys dont have great chins, but its usually more a case of not having a good defense or getting old.
It's usually the punches that boxers don't see that knock them out anyways. The perfect punch can stop ANYONE glass jaw or not. A chin doesn't score points, landing punches to it and the body scores points.
Some are so obsessed over the childish *he's got a glass jaw!* nonsense it makes me wonder if this site is full of preteen kids.
I find the people who make these "glass chin" comments almost in every post, are simpletons who have no understanding of boxing. So instead of pointing out a pertinent technical flaw, they shoot for the "glass chin" because it's the easiest thing to say.
Yeah, yeah the old unprovable myth of "that punch woulda KOd anyone" Prove it. The only thing that one can know is it KOd the fighter it knocked out. And, if that fighter gets starched more than once, chances are we're talking about a glass jaw!! Glass jaws exist in boxing. Most KOs happen because a fighter's chin is less than solid.
Thomas Hearns is often remembered for having a fragile chin. However he took some great punches in his time. The big punches Hearns took from Hagler and Barkley would likely have KO'd anyone. Frank Bruno also springs to mind. However, he took some bombs over the years. I'm sure there are similar examples.
I know Amir Khan looks to have a weak jaw, but he took some massive punches from Maidana? Surely that means his moving up in weight improved it...along with his conditioning etc. Seems like conditioning, weight etc play a massive part in a fighters chin, and not just genetics, because how many fighters have we seen that lose their punch resistance from dropping wight too quickly? Just what seems the more obvious answer
Why do you fixate on 'glass jaws' anyway Zakman? I have just joined this site and just don't get all this 'chin checker' group stuff? I'm not being a smart arse but surely there are loads more to talk about?
Glass Jaws exist in Boxing. That is a Fact. Is it any different than people on here that post about P4P rankings over and over? I mean **** P4P doesn't even exist it is all conjecture and mythical. Without the ChinCheckers on ESB there would not be any fighters with Glass Jaws every KO would be blamed on something stupid like "weight drain" or 'not being in their Prime" or some other idiotic excuse. The ChinCheckers have NEVER said that every fighter that gets KOed has a Glass Jaw. That is a blatant lie by people on here to make excuses because their favorite fighter got brutally or embarrassingly KOed.
I know there are more decked champs out there, but Hamed first popped into mind. Mostly because of balance issues though.
