15 YEARS AGO: Joe Calzaghe UD Chris Eubank to win the vacant WBO super-middleweight title. He went on to make 21 defences over the next 10 years. In the process becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion. Joe is widely regarded as the greatest super-middleweight of all time. Share your memories of the Eubank contest and Joe's remarkable career.
Chris Eubank, best remembered for fights between 1990-93, with most arguing that he was never the same fighter after almost killing Michael Watson in 91. Defeated by Calzaghe 6 years after that, in 1997, after losing to Collins twice. Bernard Hopkins, twice defeated by Jermain Taylor 3 years before Calzaghe and 43 years old when beaten by Calzaghe. Roy Jones, KO'd twice four years before Calzaghe would face him, when Roy was two months from age 40. What a legend.
How come a "legend" was born in Calzaghe when he beat Eubank but Eubank was past his best when Collins beat him?
Great fight, I thought Calzaghe was excellent in his first 12 round fight vs an experienced legend like Eubank, Joe won at least 10 rounds... I knew then that JC was a special fighter.
Does that mean it doesn`t count or it does count ?.... because if it doesn`t then that pretty much makes Barrera a 2 weight world champion as opposed to a 3 weight champion since he was only the WBO champion at 122.... just saying.
Great fight, was really impressed by the effort and graft of both fighters. Calzaghe was so hungry to become a champion, and he didn't stop coming for 12 rounds, which made Eubank uncomfortable. At the same time, Eubank put up a great fight, hitting Calzaghe with some big right hands, and showing good head movement and skill. I know a lot of posters on here dislike Calzaghe and Eubank, but it was a great fight, well worth watching
Joe fans logic, he was past it clearly but JOe fans are doing everything to make the case that he wasnt past it so this win looks like a very good win for Joe. I was joking that he miraculously became prime again when he face joe
