Brian Mitchell comes to mind here, enjoyed his style. So fluid mid range, slipping punches and countering with accuracy with both gloves, along with his ability to create angles while landing

Galindez was a favorite of mine...even after he went total counterpuncher and had all those close 15 round decisions.

Luckily right there onvthe dvds. I watch those more thn live boxing anymore. GALINDEZ 15 rounds with Yaqui from Rome :) But my favorite GALINDEZ moment is Rossman2. A clinic on machismo in Victor s last great moment. GALINDEZ vs the Rossman brothers. They never stood a chance. Rest in peace champ. You deserve it.

I loved all those close 15 round decisions...and I thought they were all legit in favor of Victor.
Those two Galindez-Rossman fights are favorites of mine as well....they're both underrated rivalries IMO. Great performance by Rossman in seizing the day and executing a great fight plan to take the title...and in that rematch, Victors nationalistic passion was rekindled...and as you mentioned, that machismo...I never seen it displayed any stronger with Duran, Chavez or any other that I can think of. That was Galindez's last gasp...he had nothing left for a man he had already beaten routinely in Jesse Burnett, or for Marvin Johnson, who he would have trounced just a few years earlier.

Of course one of my very favorites was Carlos Monzon...so very different from just about all other Latin champions in his in-the-ring temperament. Cold, emotionless and always in control. Watched all throughout his reign...and he never let me down. In the elite group of greats.

YES SIR GALINDEZ WAS SPECIAL. WHEN HE DIED TODAY IN 1980, Argentino lost a legend.

Glad to see this. Galindez is one of my favourite fighters of all time, and that first fight against Kates is right near the top of my personal favourites, too.

There is just something about Galindez which has always fascinated me. The way he seemed to get cut in every fight, yet still often manage to win despite his face being a mask of crimson; the way he regularly scored knockdowns or fight-changing counter punches when he had his back to the ropes (that's how he turned the tide against Rossman in their rematch, how he decked Eddie against the run of play, how he did much of his best work against Kates etc.); the nasty edge he had to him as demonstrated when he planted a clean shot on the other Rossman brother when he jumped in the right during the rematch or when he screamed maniacally at Kates to stay down in the closing seconds of that amazing fight in South Africa in 1976...They all just added to that unique aura.

These days a lot of people are sleeping on Galindez's resume. 12-2 in WBA title fights in what was a fantastic era for the Light-Heavies (my favourite, personally, due to the great mix of personalities and styles, and for the sheer amount of instant classic fights they served up between them) and wins over Ahumada, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (I think the verdict, while close, was just about fair), Kates, Rossman, Yaqui Lopez etc. He was also the first man ever to bounce back from losing a Light-Heavyweight title by regaining it.

Ah, Victor. Think I'll have to revisit some of these favourites of mine again soon.

I agree entirely. And until he started getting hand prpoblems a great puncher. It all accumulated (he was the greatest pinpoint accurate puncher I Ever saw) and fighters just wilted against him. Prime for prime, he stops Hagler. Yes stops. Of course, along WITH Duran, King Carlos is The greatest fighter I ever saw fight live (on tv) in my lifetime. No bull****, Monzon & Duran were the best I ever saw. Loved the 70s fightingwise from beginning to end. Monzon Duran GALINDEZ PIPINO Little Red Smokin Joe Arguello Canto Briscoe Zarate Zamora Pintor Pedroza the great Gomez Muangsurin DeJesus Limon Gushiken Franklin Olivares Hafey Cervantes Holmes LEON Shavers Ronquillo Dynomite Cyclone (crushing puncher) Yaqui. Led ZEPPELIN. TAKE ME BACK PLEASE :) :) :) :) :)

I Agree entirely brother. GALINDEZ is the one you want to be with in a barfight. Andy Rossman :) :) He never tried THAT bull**** again :) GALINDEZ crushed Rossmans heart and Mike was never the same again.

Monzon proved his character as a fighter...and transcended from a "good" champion to a great champion in that defense vs Briscoe...getting badly hurt in the 9th, he rode it out like a boss, and in the last 5 rounds, actually stood in front of and traded with Bad Bennie....and of course, in that rematch with Valdez...bouncing up from that 2nd round kd like it was nothing, and fought his way back, outclassing the great Valdez in those all important championship rounds 13, 14 and 15. Remember, he was 4 years older than Valdez. That was character..in the ring character of course....I wish i could say that he had outside the ring character as well.

I would definitely want Galindez on my side in a bar fight...and what a fool Andy Rossman was, screwing with Galindez like that.
