Olympic gold medallist Odlanier Solis and former world heavyweight champion Francois Botha were meant to meet in the ring in December 2007 but the “White Buffalo” drew in his horns on very short notice. Now everything is set and the contracts are signed for the fight to take place on May 30th in Bilbao, Spain..

“Botha still has a very good name”, states Solis (9-0-0, 6 kos). “His only problem will be that I don’t care much about names. I’m looking forward to finally meeting him in the ring though.”

ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner: “By beating Botha Odlanier can once more show that he belongs to the elite of heavyweight boxing. In addition to that fighting such an experienced opponent will definitely help him to improve his game and beating Botha will bring him closer to a title fight.”

In his 18 years in professional boxing Botha (45-4-2, 28 kos) only lost to world class athletes: Michael Moorer (November 1996), Mike Tyson (January 1999), Lennox Lewis (July 2000) and Wladimir Klitschko (March 2002).

Promoted by ARENA Box-Promotion and their local partner Stock Eventos the show in Bilbao also features the heavyweight clash between hard-hitting German prospect Konstantin Airich (9-0-1, 8 kos) and “Brixton Bomber” Danny Williams (38-6-0, 30 kos).

So Solis-Botha is back on. But Airich fighting Williams is quite a big news as well... I mean that's a huge step-up in competition...

Think you can enlighten me on Solis, Bone?

Everything I've read/heard is that he's another superbly talented but out of shape heavy.

Suberbly talented HW at the amateurs, Olympic gold winner, "typical Cuban": great footwork, counter-punching skills and power.

vs. Haye in 2001. I can't find the Olympic final on YT

On the other hand, he's not showing the same talent in the pros - not at all. He's 50 pounds north of his medal-winning weight, he's lazy, some bad rumors are talking about problems with the bottle, looks unmotivated, not really the same accuracy and power at this weight, flat-footed, average punch output... Really, compared to the amateur days, it's a level down in performance. It still might be enough for a world title at some stage...

Has Botha got anything left in him these days?

I like the Williams vs Airich fight. Airich is a huge puncher and has good potential while Williams has still plenty to offer if he is in shape. I pick Williams to stop Airich by half way but that depends on Williams conditioning.

Williams has a fight lined up against Big John McDermott soon as well.

the guy who handles gamboa and solis are doing a great job.. This is what prospects should be doing instead of fighting 20 cans and get to 20-0 only to get expose once they step up

Well... the last time a Cuban boxer really stepped up in competition (JP Hernandez vs. W. Braithwaite) he got stopped... a loss is just a loss and a learning lesson, but that one did huge damage to Joan Pablo's marketability, so what works with very experienced and seemingly complete fighters like Gamboa or Solis, might not work with other, much more inexperienced fighters.

Williams really is a big step-up for Airich, who I have to admit, never seen before...

I take it this means Solis isn't fighting on the US card next week then? I like how Arena has been moving these guys, but I'm sick of them jerking fans around by constantly cancelling and rescheduling their fights each time they can find a better opportunity. At least it wasn't a fight on the televised part of the card.

Botha's only fought once in the last 5 years, so who knows what he'll have left in the tank.

I haven't heard much about Airich before, which makes it surprising that a major promoter is sticking him in with such a good fighter this early. Considering he drew against Mazakin, who Solis destroyed, I'll guess this is too big of a step up, but at 29 years old, I guess it's a step he'll need to make prematurely at some point.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other if you ask me. This method just seems refreshing because it's less common. If it were the other way around there'd be complaints about how most guys are brought along too fast. :yep

i can see your point but this way i think is better to tell the real deal from the hype. DLH and cotto had pretty good opponents in their early careers (under 15 fights)

As has been said, its impressive to see Solis taking on someone on Botha's experience level after so few fights. Seem they have a lets get this thing going, already attitude with Solis.

But with Botha being so inactive, Solis may be able to get a big name on his win column, and only be the tenth fight. Wow.

A win over Frans Botha in his 9th fight would be pretty impressive.

Just as impressive as Povetkin's win over Donald.

I like this matchup. Even if Botha is over the hill, he outboxed the durable Bob Mirovic with ease last summer. I like to see Solis uses his feet a little more this time. The perfect scenario for Solis is dancing and outboxing a tough Botha for 5-6 rounds until he turns up the heat and knocking the tough south african out in round 7.
