i'm not sure if it has been discussed on here before, i know de la hoya was a converted southpaw who fought orthodox, but did you ever wonder what his career would have been like if he had fought as a southpaw? i know he would be losing that stiff left jab and powerful left hook, which were his best weapons, but i wonder what type of straight left he would have possesed, had he fought southpaw. can anyone remember if he ever turned southpaw in any of his fights?
considering his right wasn't such a bad thing i've watched him light up several people right right hands this could be an awesome thing
I don't believe I've ever seen Oscar turn southpaw, even for a second. I sure could've missed it, still, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a common practice for him. I know, as a southpaw myself, I'm severely handicapped fighting orthodox. I no longer have my right jab, which of course stymies the hell out of most folks right off the bat! Plus I no longer have my right hook to sneak in when it's least expected. And without that big straight left, well....... It is nice to have that powerful left jab and hook when a lefty's fighting orthodox, but the right is usually awkward at best. Just my $.02.
so you're a right handed fighter who fights southpaw i'm assuimg? i know there were a lot of fighters who fought with their dominant hand in front. Moorer, Winky Wright, Cotto, to name a few, and i'm not 100% sure but i saw a clip of judah bowling and throwing a football with his right hand.
It would have made him a greater boxer. Oscar was tall for many of the weight classes he competed in and preferred to fight outside. A tall southpaw is a ***** for most people to deal with, and outside is the optimal range for southpaws. He clearly wasn't lacking in the left hand and still would have had a great one as a southpaw. A southpaw's main weapon is the left hand. The key difference is how much better his weaker hand, the right, would have been. Converts compromise themselves since their weak hands are in the rear, and it now have to travel a greater distance. He would have been smoother with his stronger left foot in the back. I haven't seen many elite Mexican southpaws. Contrast it with the Cubans who embrace southpaws.
I've seen DLH turn southpaw multiple times. I'm not sure how much better he would have been; it's more about comfort, and I don't know if he was necessarily forced to fight orthodox. He certainly didn't seem to have any problems with his movement and coordination, and when his right hand developed in his prime, he was complete as an orthodox fighter with the bonus of a monster lead.
He basically had no choice but to fight southpaw. One of his trainers as a child didn't know how to train lefties.
You mean orthodox? That's interesting. I wonder if he had issues, but then again, tapes early on show he was an absolute beast.
i know all we can do is speculate over the issue, but do you feel de la hoya would have been as successful had he fought as a southpaw? i feel like he would be a completely different fighter stylistically.
No, I'm a southpaw, as far as throwing baseballs, batting baseball, boxing, etc. However, I write with my right hand, I'm not much good with precise stuff with my left. I know, I'm a strange duck. But I can bang with my left! Or at least I could at one time, I'm 50 years old now. (leans on walker, puts in teeth)
