Oscar De La Hoya is a Top 50 ATG and Greater Than Floyd Mayweather: http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=537628 I did a thread on it.
Greatness is not rated by skill or talent in boxing, but by resume and accomplishments. A one dimensional fighter can be greater than a highly skilled boxing wizard if the one dimensional fighters has a higher quality resume.
I would qualify that by greatness is defined by who you fought and WHEN you fought them. Resumes don't mean dudu if you're fighting "names" past their prime. Old school fighters will always get a nod from me because they HAD to fight each other meaning they didn't duck anyone. The current fighters fight names just to boost PPVs. Floyd vs Pac should have happened a long time ago. Floyd vs Mosley should have a long time ago. Same with Floyd vs DLH. Pac vs DLH was way beyond DLH's prime ... Pac vs Cotto should have happened before the Margarito fight. This is the ducking era vs the golden era.
And one of main reasons for this,is who Oscar fought.the man dared to be great.you win some, you lose some.especially against PRIME ATG boxers.one thing what has been really rare in last 25yrs. Nobody comes close to Oscar.Oscar could have chose same road as Floyd, but Oscar was really after that GOAT title.Floyd is generally regarded as the best boxer in 25yrs.and Floyd never entered the ring against PRIME ATG fighters.yes there are some, but to say i rate those as Whitaker,Chavez level archievements.and i don't think i'm rude to Floyd. Oscar is the ultimate boxer and gloryhunter.wanted to test himself against the best.not pad his record, like so many others have done.
Pacquiao fought Cotto when Cotto was 29 years old and had only taken 1 loss in his career. How should Pacquiao have known that Margarito would defeat Cotto. Besides Pacquiao was busy with fighting other legends. The 2000's was a period in which he was fighting Barrera, Marquez and Morales. He didn't have time to fight all the legends in 1 year.
