Where do you rank ol' Oscar on your P4P list? What if he had an offical win over, say, Trinidad? Do you consider that a win? What does it say about him to be able to compete with fighters like Mayweather at his age? Best wins, worst performances?
Thanks a lot Russel - I'll give your question a go aswell! Its tricky because he semms (at first glance) to be one of the best of his era but not of all-time. This maybe a bit deceiving though, Felix Trinidad fought a lot of good boxers, and allways got to them usually, but when he fought a great boxer (Pea was past it) he could be outboxed, ODLH comes into this category imo, as i had him beating Tito. So ODLH must have been a great boxer imo. As a fighter i dont think he was the very best at close range in his prime, he destroyd his opponents from his own range, especially when they were shorter than him, long left hooks with plenty of power and speed would usually do it for him. He could have the fight taken to him (by the best fighters such as Mosley), so i would think Gavilan would beat him at 147, and Arguello at 135 or 130, these fights would be classics. I could possibly put him in my top 20/25 WWs as i feel history will underrate him, i dont think he achieved enough at other weights to rank that high. My verdict is - a great boxer, but not an elite 1
The Quartey fight is on Youtube, I scored it for Quartey by one point. I scored the Pea fight for Pea by two points. I've not yet scored the Mosley/DLH II fight, but from what I've heard, Oscar likely should've won. I had him handily beating Tito. He clearly lost to Sturm. Anyways, he has the best opposition faced of any recent fighter(and probably any fighter from the 80's on), but he was pretty much win some lose some against the best, so he didn't stand out like so many other greats, but much props for taking them all on. A top 50 argument could be made, in fact I may place him inside my own.
Thanks Russel, its alright if u cant, ive never been able to find them mysellf, e amazin' if u could (please do!!! ha), thanks anyway for tryin' though!!
Is the full fight on youtube though Pea?? Never found the whole thing on there mysellf, i'll have a look now!
It was posted pretty recently, I subscribe to quite a few Youtube guys myself, so I'm always up to date on the new vids.
I don't know whether I want to fault Oscar for the bad decisions he's won or not considering he's been screwed a few times as well. Guess I can't be too hard on him considering how much he weighed vs. Sturm and what not. His powers unbelievable though. Flooring Gatti in one with the first serious punch he lands on him... Scary stuff.
Very skilled fighter. Never afraid to take on the best. Great combinations, movement, handspeed. Less than stellar head movement however, and his stamina was a real concern in most of his fights, which is perhaps why he wasn't as consistent as so many other greats. Still, I'd rate him in the top 50 of all time, and that's saying something.
I think I'd place him in that group as well. If he'd completely dedicated himself to boxing, filled in those periods of inactivity, ignored other pursuits like music and promoting... I feel he could be even great.er
Russel and Sweet Pea, just watched Oscar-Ike, i give it to Quartey by 1 point, i had the 11th really hard to judge, whoever got that 1 got the decision by 1 point for me, i give it to Quartey though
