the greatest fraud in the history of the sport, calzaghe landed over 300 punches on an old, washed up, punching bag, glass jawed jones and still couldn't knock him out. that said, how many of the crackhead's stoppages were legitimate stoppages in which his opponent was defenseless and in serious danger?
Sugar Joe was a devastating power puncher in his prime. Every one of those ref assited stoppages was legit and for the well being of the victim. Had they been allowed to go on, they might've ended up comatose.
Joe had knockout power right throw his career , it was the changes he made when he kept breaking his hands. I do note that as he moved up he did arm punch more , but this was again helping his hands. I didnt like what he did or his style , but it did help him fight into his late 30's.
Most of them , but I think your question should have been 'how many KO's did he score'. As I dont think I have seen Joe score a knockout.
Had some kind of sudo-record going on with how many punches he landed on Lacy and then Jones, and couldn't stop either... The Lacy fight considered by many to be his best performance ever. But one glance at his "highlight" reel of knockouts and you can see they were all TKO's, 90% of his opponents being stopped on pure accumulation, overwhelmed with activity and not throwing back. I remember a knowledgeable poster in Classic saying Calzaghe only left one or two of his opponents, ever, out cold or anything approaching it.
it doesn't matter what kind of stoppage it was. stopping a fight when a fighter isn't hurt and is simply waiting for an opening is denying that fighter a chance of accomplishing anything. i see if calzaghe actaully had any of his opponents hurt. and the fact that 80% of his opponents were stiff bums, his inability to knock them out shows how weak he was.
