I forgot a few Faux Christian of the Year Andre Ward Phoney of the Year Andre Ward Deck-stacking, Dice-loading, Neutral Judges Refusing, Disingenuous Sack of **** of the Year Award Andre Ward Get Out of the Kitchen Because it's Too Hot Fake Retirement of the Year Andre Ward Anti-Road Warrior of the Year Andre Ward
Nobody with a clue about boxing will think that at all, what controversy there may have been with 1 or 2 fights wont effect there opinion of Ward when looking at his overall immaculate resume from winning Olympic gold to his undefeated pro record which is an obvious 1st ballot HOF career. He dominated the Super Middleweights division including easily winning a tournament containing all of the best and stopped the lineal Light Heavyweight champ Dawson who moved down to fight him.He then overcomes promotional issues that cost him 2 years of his prime to move up and beat the undisputed champion twice all in an era of top P4P fighters avoiding each other Ward was doing the opposite. That 2nd Kovalev fight the Kov fans and Ward haters conveniently forget that Kovalev was behind on the scorecards, clearly fatiguing and hurting from legal body shots and the ref in saving him robbed Ward of an inevitable KO.
Fighter of the Year: Between Loma and Wanhek. Beating the p4p number one twice in one year normally should be enough to make you a lock for number one. But Loma took three souls and didn't lose a round in the process. Makes it difficult to pick btx the two. Might lean Loma since the result of the first SSR-Gonzalez fight was debatable. Fight of the Year: AJ-Klitschko. Spectacle, drama, massive momentum shifts. SSR-Gonzalez I, Jack-DeGale, Roman-Salido and GGG-Canelo are all worthy of mention, among others. But in terms of overall significance, AJ-Klitschko is my clear choice, barring anything utterly ridiculous occurring in the next couple of weeks. Round of the Year: Valdez-Marriaga Round 10. Marriaga comes out smoking and appears to hurt Oscar. Valdez comes back and plants Marriaga to the mat with a perfect counter left hook. Marriaga rises, weathers the storm and engages in a crazy exchange with Valdez, landing a right hand bomb that shakes Valdez as the round closes! Thought about AJ-Klistchko Round 5 but two momentum shifts beats one, no matter how massive. Also worth mentioning, Hurd-Trout Round 6. Upset of the Year: Truax-DeGale. Horn-Pacquiao and Ali-Cotto were big upsets, but they both featured younger guys against faded greats operating well past their best. Truax-DeGale featured a guy still considered to be one of the best in his division against guy considered a complete also ran. The fact that Truax won in DeGale's backyard seals the deal. Robbery of the Year: Murata-N'dam I. This isn't close. This isn't close to being close. Murata controlled eight or nine rounds easily, bounced N'dam off the mat like a yo-yo (though several obvious kd's weren't called), and still wound up somehow losing a split decision in a fight that produced universal incredulity among posters on this site and any other that you would frequent. Completely unfathomable and abhorrent decision that ranks as not only the worst of the year, but probably the worst of the past couple of decades. KO of the Year: Zolani Tete vs Siboniso Gonya. Tete broke the world record for fastest KO in a title fight with a single right hook that left Gonya on the mat for almost ten minutes. No other KO that was produced this year have combined brevity and brutality quite like this one. Comeback of the Year: Mikey Garcia. With one fight under his belt against a willing but undersized Elio Rojas, he took on and destroyed the undefeated Zlatacinin to win a lightweight strap, then followed up with a dominant win over Broner. Two relevant wins and a return to p4p status following extended time off is good enough for me to give him the nod. HM: Truax, who came back from a one round loss to Anthony Dirrell last year to win a world title this year. That's what I've got for now.
That's funny. When I saw that on fight night I was wondering what he was saying. He really is saying "No mas."
Fighter of the year? Terence Crawford Fight of the year? AJ vs Klitschko Best performance of the year? Gervonta Davis vs Pedraza Trainer of the year? Virgil hunter Division of the year? Cruiserweight will be alive well and truly next year but nothing really stands out for me. If I had too pick I'd say Lightweight. Prospect of the year? Josh Kelly
Yes, I can't believe I forgot him. I think fighter of the year's between SSR and Ward. They had wins over the proven best, at their division, and SSR did it twice. Loma and Crawford don't have those objective quality wins.
Unpopular opinion but Ward deserves fighter of the year with Joshua a close second. Do you guys understand that before Ward went up in weight, no one relevant at 175lbs wanted to fight Kovalev? No one still wants to fight Kovalev! Joshua comes second because although Wlad was a huge step up in class for him, Wlad was clearly on the decline.
Fight of the Year: wlad vs Joshua - A lock- fight had everything. Fighter of the year toss up between Wahnek and Loma Ko of the year I pick Charlo vs Lubin. Tete also in the running. Comeback: Miley Garcia Upset: Horn Robbery: Ndam Murota Prospect- ?
Changed my fighter of the year to SSR. Who else beat a great fighter twice this year? That should be the standard for fighter of the year, dominance or impressiveness is only a tie-breaker. And bump? Let's get some more thoughts? How about a better title for clickbait?
Great mentions! Especially the spotlight on the rounds of the year, which I sure couldn't think of. Truax against Degale was a larger betting underdog, 12/1, so makes sense over Ali. Murata-N'Dam was the worst robbery of the year... but I'm voting for the robbery I lost money betting on!
