...what are some predictions you made that were WAY off, but the result had you pleasantly surprised? Just to name a few... Hopkins vs Trinidad...I thought Tito would wreck and retire Hopkins, but was still rooting for BHop, mainly because them loud ass Puerto Ricans at the place I watched were driving me insane. Its kinda ironic, because I can't stand Hopkins now... Pacquiao vs DeLa Hoya....I thought Oscar was trying to capitalize off Manny's growing fame, and would blitz the much smaller man. Oops. But was voice was hoarse for days after the fight from cheering for Pac.... Morales vs Maidana....I thought Erik would get steamrolled in 3 rounds or less. I thought he had no business being in there with Marcos...Maidana won of course, but I was shocked att the success Morales had, and happy because he is one of my all-time faves...
I didn't think Sexy Sergio could KO Paul Williams the way he did after seeing their FOTY style first bout.
I thought Berto was gonna beat ortiz, but was jumping up in front of my TV yelling "KNOCK THAT MOTHER ****ER OUT!!!" Everytime ortiz had him hurt.
Hopkins/Tarver - Tarver was the man at light heavyweight then and Hopkins was jumping up 2 weight divisions after looking old in 2 fights with Taylor. I expected Hopkins to get KO'ed for the first time, what unfolded had me jumping with joy, have never been more happy to be wrong. Pacquiao/De La Hoya - Like most people didn't think Pac stood a hope in hell, Oscar was simply way too big to ever lose to Pac. Pac's performance mesmerised me, it was stunning to see a fighter out box his opponent so easily when so disadvantaged in terms of size.
You know, that was actually another occasion in which I was rooting for Hopkins, but thought he'd get waxed by Tarver. I hated Hopkins, but hated Tarver (and still do) even more. Something about Tarver's amateurish looking, yet effective style annoys the **** out of me. Anyway, that coupled with the fact that I was watching the fight here in Orlando, where everyone swore up and down they knew Tarver, made me want to see Tarver get whupped. And he did... ...there is more to that story that involves me getting **** drunk that night, and having a cop pull me over and nearly shoot me to death, but who wants to read that ****? :conf
Tommy Hearns had just come off the worst performance of his career where he got a gift against James Kinchen. The fight previous to that Hearns had gotten KTFO against Iran Barkley........ ......of course this is what was needed for Ray Leonard to finally work up the courage to grant Hearns a rematch he had deserved and had been wanting for 8 years..... ......no way coming off of those two terrible performances against Barkley and then looking completely shot and without legs vs Kinchen would I have thought Hearns could or would beat Ray Leonard who 6 months earlier had knocked out Donny Lalonde. My thinking was that Hearns would'nt have the legs to hold off Leonard and he would get stopped before the late rounds arrived........ .....could'nt have been happier than to have seen Hearns motivated and rise to the occasion to and fight off the Demons from when he was stopped 8 years earlier by Leonard.......knockdown Leonard and have him in trouble twice in the fight, and though it was bogusly ruled a draw, everyone and their Momma, even Ray and his Momma knew that Hearns finally had excorcized his Demons. Could'nt have been happier to have been wrong in my assesment of the fight.
Pascal vs Dawson: Fancied Dawson to take the UD, but had Pascal round 11 @ 90/1. Groves vs DeGale: Expected DeGale to win, happy for George to.
MAB - Hamed, SRL - Hagler, Ali - Foreman. Even though I was only a little kid I watched boxing with my dad, loved Ali and was terrified of Foreman. Yes I'm old.
Mosley vs Margarito: thought Shane was too old and was going to be worn down by Margarito. Having been a long time fan, I wasn't looking forward to that, but by the end I was jumping out of my seat. Morales vs Maidana: just like everyone else. Holyfield vs Tyson I: Really thought Evander was going to get mauled in this one, watched in awe over the course of the last few rounds.
Pac vs Oscar- predicted a close first 4 rounds before de la hoya's size takes over and TKO's Pac after corner throws in towel at round 8. Morales - maidana- competetive first 6 rounds with morales using his ring IQ then getting KO'ed in 9 after maidana put on the pressure - i had it 115-113 for maidana
