THE NRL is investigating the business relationships South Sydney part-owner Russell Crowe has with a number of media and entertainment companies in relation to the club's salary cap.

Acting on an email tip-off, salary cap auditor Ian Schubert is delving into Crowe's recent dealings with Channel Nine, Channel Seven, ANZ Stadium and V8 Supercars.
But the Hollywood star sent us an email on Friday, sounding anything but concerned.
"The author of the email below is a chronic conspiracy theorist and you should do your own due diligence regarding the individual before taking anything he writes about with any level of seriousness," Crowe said.
"His antics are well known at Souths. Every connection he makes is untrue and the product of imagination only.
    "Have a great weekend."
NRL boss David Gallop, who was copied into the email, says the investigation will continue.

Part of the investigation involves Souths players Sam Burgess and Beau Champion working on Channel Nine's Footy Show this year and Greg Inglis signing a third-party deal with ANZ Stadium in his new contract.
We're told the NRL will interview Crowe to establish if players benefited from any of his roles at Nine, Seven, the Ben Hur extravaganza at ANZ Stadium or the V8 Supercars.
Gallop confirmed the investigation is not all about Inglis' new contract that is yet to be approved.
"We have received some information from a gentleman who has now sent the info to you and other media outlets," Gallop said. "It is not unusual to receive that type of information - we are looking into it, but it is too early to say what it might lead to."
Asked if Crowe would be questioned, Gallop said: "We don't generally announce the nature of our inquiries, but where credible information is provided to us we interview all parties that could be relevant to the issues raised."
There is no suggestion Crowe is knowingly involved in an attempt to cheat the salary cap, but the NRL is determined to establish full details of arrangements at companies where Rabbitohs players have third-party deals.
Inglis' ambassador role with ANZ Stadium came just two weeks after Crowe had appeared as a narrator for Ben Hur.
We understand Crowe was paid by the stadium for his work, but at a figure far less than the going rate for an actor of his stature.

conspiracy theorist or Souths are doing something dodgy.Russell
working cheap sounds suss.there are snakes at South Sydney and they are betraying the red and greens.

Mundine attacks NRL over Inglis deal hold-up

ANTHONY MUNDINE claims Greg Inglis is a victim of tall-poppy syndrome because of the involvement of himself and actor Russell Crowe in convincing the Test superstar to join South Sydney.
Inglis, regarded as one of the world's best players, remains in limbo four months after being forced out of the Storm due to the salary-cap scandal and is still uncertain about his future.
    Advertisement: Story continues below
The 23-year-old centre and his wife Sally, who were married yesterday in Noosa, plan to move to Sydney after Inglis signed a three-year deal with Souths. But the NRL have thus far refused to register his contract and are investigating salary-cap allegations sparked by Crowe talking up the deal during a recent television appearance in the United States.
''They're the perks you get with Russell Crowe. That is what he brings to the game,'' Mundine said of the Rabbitohs co-owner's interview with Jay Leno. ''I don't think Australians really appreciate him the way he should be appreciated.
''When he is in America he is treated like a God. That just shows you how big he is but I think Australians, when someone is doing good, they just want to knock them down.''
Crowe, who has been on a promotional tour in the US and Japan for his latest movie, hopes to be ringside for Mundine's fight against former Souths fullback Garth Wood at Acer Arena on Wednesday night and may speak with NRL officials about his recruitment of Inglis while in Sydney.
The Herald reported on Saturday that the NRL will not accept Souths proposal to register Inglis under the salary cap for $190,000 next season and $350,000 for each of the following two years, as well as a car and a $100,000 sponsorship deal from their marquee-player allowance, and are looking into his four third-party deals totalling $200,000.
But Mundine maintains the contract is above board and warned the NRL that they risked driving Inglis out of the game after the Brisbane deal he initially left Melbourne for also ran into salary-cap problems.
''I think it is a bit of 'haterism' with the league and Russell Crowe and me and Souths,'' he said. ''Everything is legal and right but they just want to blow it up out of proportion to show that 'we are the bosses and we can do whatever we want when we want. We'll sign when we want to sign'. But they are their own worst enemies, and if they keep going the way they are they won't have a league.''
Mundine, who has known Inglis since he burst onto the scene with the Storm in 2005, said he had encouraged him to join Souths because of the club's strong links to the indigenous community. ''I just gave GI my opinion and told him what I thought, which is obviously he should play for Souths, and the reasons,'' Mundine said. ''But at the end of the day it was up to GI and he went back to his family or whoever he wanted to talk to, spoke about it with them and then made his own decision.
''The opportunity he has - not just on the rugby league field but off it - as far as being an indigenous role model and an ambassador for certain organisations and companies … no other club can do that but South Sydney because of their history with indigenous Australians.
''GI is not a character who talks out, he doesn't like to rock the boat but at the end of the day he is his own man and believe me he is smarter than what people might think.''

How the hell can they controll this salary cap?

I mean, what's stopping anyone from giving someone a million dollars as a retirement present.

Couple of hundred G's Per season for three years. Retire. Golden handshake.:huh

To my knowledge, theres no written rule set in place, it's just up to Schibert's descretion. Which is a joke, as Schubert is a moron and is way out of his depth in this job.

My knowledge of the 3rd party deals are that they have to be organized by your manager and not the club. Apparently Souths deal was very similar to the Bronco's, yet the third party deals the Bronco's were willing to get for Inglis couldn't stand now that he wants to play with Souths.

I really dont know how they can OK Gasnier's return for only 50K cap money this season, popped up with a substantial amount of 3rd party deals, yet now say that Souths need to pay GI more than 190K cap money for the first season.

These ****s are as corrupt as FIFA.

Inglis will still be a Bunny in 2011 though. Worst case scenario will be thast we'll have to offload someone like Simpson to prop up his cap payments.

I think you're a little off there mate.
Burgess' transfer fee that Crowe paid his club doesnt count towards the cap, but the contract he has with Souths does.

Apparently Burgess' contract had to be scrutinised for over a month for it to be given the green light by the NRL.

Great, if erratic, player. I loved watching Souths when they won the pre-season cup back in the early nineties.
