I'm a big fan of the importance of world title fights, especially in earlier eras when it was rare to win a belt cheaply as compared to the post-2000 era. This thought process, definitely informed my choices. The numbers after the names are their overall records in the 1960s and their title fight records from the decade. IX 1970s
1. Carlos Monzon - 25-0 during the 70s w/ marquee wins vs Benvenuti x2, Griffith x2, Valdez x2, and Napoles.
2. Roberto Duran - 12 title defences. It was the 70s that made Duran a great fighter, but the 80s is where he became an ATG.
3. Wilfredo Gomez - Undefeated in the 70s w/ 10 title defences.
4. Muhammad Ali - Arguably past his best but still coming out with marquee wins against ATG's with only 3 losses.
5. Alexis Arguello - 2 division champ w/ marquee wins against Kobayashi, Olivares, Legra, Escalera x2, Limon, & Chacon.
