I saw this list a few yrs back but only recently found it, it was the official end of century votes (1999) for top boxers of the century.

They did it for every weight class too but I`ll start with the big one, the top 10 p4p boxers of the century.

There were a panel of 5 judges... Angelo Dundee... Lou Duva... Don Chargin... Eddie Futch... Gil Clancy.

If a judge gave you a 1st place vote, you got 10 points... if he gave you a 2nd place vote, you got 9 points & so on... if you get a 10th place vote you get 1 point.

The total number of votes will be shown beside the name of the fighter.
(Numbers in brackets show how many 1st place awards that were given by a judge)

JACK DEMPSEY knocking ****ers out from 16 years old untill 70 when he dropped 2 would be muggers,1 ko in what 18 seconds, always demolishing bigger men ,slicker men,and if not for racist promoters would have smoked every legitimate contender out there,he was the tyson of the 20,s of course hes p4p top 10,oh yeah more 1rst round ko,s then any past champ and

Jack Dempsey was not only one of the most exciting heavyweight champions in history he was also one of the ring's greatest all time pound for pound fighters. Dempsey has one of the best knockout records in history with an unparalleled winning streak of 32-0 with 28 knockouts, including 17 of them in the first round! His victims included most of the top heavyweight contenders of the period such as Carl Morris, Fred Fulton, Al Palzer, Battling Levinsky, Gunboat Smith, K.O. Bill Brennan, Billy Miske, and his title-winning massacre of big Jess Willard.

It's not unreasonable to say that the classic section of ESB is as good an authority as any to put forward such a list or to denounce one. This particular list can't be taken seriously, imo.

I think you could maybe even argue that dempsey achievment wise is not a top 10 heavy off all time, yes he looks brilliant against willard but his resume is not great, and the best fighter he ever fought beat him twice and aside from the controversy of the long count beat him well

Dempsey stood out to me too, he looks as if he shouldnt be there, especially above the likes of Duran.

I also heard he only weighed 180 + pounds, if this is true & he was Koing big HWTs, maybe he does deserve a mention... nah, Dempsey shouldnt be there.

I would have Pep above Louis & possibly Armstrong but at least he made the top 5, Ive seen crazy lists were he is around the 15-20 mark, now thats ****ed up.

Conn and Dempsey are way too high but since this is a vote it is not that surprising as they are more popular than others who are greater p4p like Langford, Charles, Walker and Walcott.

Would have moved Greb up in the top 5 imo. Drop Dempsey.

Some how seeing Greb danging at ten is not right.

Caniz, and Ross should be there. Ali is too high imo. I would also add Fitz in the top 6 about.

"smoked every legitimate contender out there"

Except the best of them, Harry Wills, Gene Tunney, and Harry Greb.

Surprised Langford's not on the list, on a p4p basis he's right up there.

List seems too top heavy with respect to heavyweights, Ali, Louis, and Dempsey. Normally the p4p was created to recognize non heavies.

Conn on the list is simply strange to me. Not even sure about Ali given that he normally had a size advantage over most of his opponents.

And personally if I were doing a p4p list on just heavies I'd put Holyfield near the top based on the fact he fought a lot of superheavies who were significantly bigger than him. Didn't always win, but he always gave a good account of himself.

And as far as Greb goes, I'd put him p4p ahead of any heavyweight, hell he beat Tunney which is more than Dempsey managed to do.

All of them know their stuff, I'm not denying that. The thing is, most of them are partial to fighters they grew up watching, if not fighters they trained or had some affiliation with. A lot of the experts and analysts aren't as well versed on most of the lower weight divisions as well, or if they are they just don't pay them as much mind. A lot of times it's the fighters that had the most historical significance that play the biggest role in their memories and therefore their lists, as they had first hand accounts of these events rather than hindsight, so they'll always leave the biggest impressions.

There's no doubt those guys are boxing experts, especially on the technical aspects of the sport and teaching them, but, while they may (and most do) have the knowledge neccessary to make a legitimate and fair list, their opinions are likely more biased in favor of those who impacted them the most because of the reasons stated above. I mean c'mon, Billy Conn on an all time top 10 P4P list?
