Well OK - here's what I see. The first statement implies a demand that the best have to prove themselves in the hardest sport there is with blood and sweat. The second implies that a fighter can show fancy without really being tested and still be rewarded by appreciation and admiration.
The second is like the theory of evolution. We can see it, but cannot prove it, indefinitely. The first is like that intelligent design stuff. Making it up as you go along, to suit ones own agenda, abandoning all logic. For example. "Joe Calzaghe has fought nobody, he fought Manfredo last time out. Wright KOs him." Logically the is nothing about beating Peter Manfredo in devastating fashion that indicates he will lose to Wright. However, the impressive fashion in which he performed leaves you only with the possibility of making pro-Calzaghe assumptions.
I agree with you that the above is a ridiculous pick. The difference is I believe that the 1% that makes a great different from the good is proven under fire, that only when you are in the ring with a man who is your equal or better in many categories does the things you are amongst the best at come to the surface - you see? We all knew Lewis had a great jab - but it was when he got in with Tua, a very special fighter, that he was able to put on his masterclass. Roy Jones Junior made a world class athlete look normal when he beat Hopkins and on it goes. When you say, "there is no proof that Calzaghe is less than great" you have a point - but only up to another point. We never saw him in there with a guy who would truly test him which means we never found out about his top 1% in heart, character, generalship or technique. I can't hand out to him the type of status to Joe that you have. That's because i've never seen him in there with the type of fighters that would truly test him at peak. Sure. I would make him a favourite against Winky although I think Wright would have a chance.
well thanks for keeping me in mind anyway.....i still feel like a newbie here sometimes so i guess i will just keep posting and hopefully make a bigger splash with others.
Brooklyn, I think it's high time to welcome you and kg to the committee. I'll do a formal count later, but starting tomorrow we'll probably freeze you two guys and try to encourage votes for others. More later. ...
