So Kovalev went back home to Russia, and just gave a short statement, where he says that he is not gonna be working with John David Jackson anymore. What do you think? Was this a smart move? Who should he hire as his new Coach?

    ***ENGLISH TRANSLATION*** of VIDEO:

"I've decided for myself that I need a new specialist, because solely on my merits alone I've reached this point, and to go further by myself, will be tough..."

Damn he gave 0 credit to JDJ... JDJ should have went to team Ward LOL

    He needs to reevaluate himself.

Kovalev is not blameless in this situation, but if his relationship with RDJ is broken, then this was probably the right move.

He needs someone he can trust and have faith in.

    Which will be pretty hard.

Also, I have to say. You have the most sporadic post history I have ever seen. Here's a like just because you're crazy, man.

Of course it is a smart move if he doesn't want to work with Jackson and follow his instructions. But I wonder how good Kovalev could have been had he listened to Jackson.

It's the right move. Kovalev clearly didn't respect JDJ as his position was relegated by the end to just a glorified mitt holder. Worse he was negotiating with and giving camp intel to team Ward when they were in training camp, can't trust a snake.

JDJ is really fit, and it won't be easy to find a replacement who can hold the mitts for a hard-punching light heavyweight like he can.

But seriously, from Kovalev's comments before the fight and Jackson interviews after it was obvious Kovalev doesn't respect him. Running the text below the video through a translator, Kovalev says he's not leaving JDJ because he spoke to Ward's team, just that "I need a new specialist... to jump over the level of Ward's boxing, I need the help of a professional." I do find this hypocritical. Jackson has the knowledge and teaching methods to probably have helped Kovalev if he was receptive, and gave him the role he should've had as a trainer. The problem is Kovalev's stubbornness. His belief that he knows what's best and doesn't need to listen to anyone. Abel Sanchez said he didn't have the patience for him. JDJ surely feels the same way, and he's happy to move on. Good luck to the next trainer, he'll have his hands full.

Someone else suggested Anatoly Lomachenko. Of course he's great, but he's someone who would expect the boxer to listen to him and be open to his methods. A good trainer for Kovalev should be someone whose name, accomplishments, and knowledge he respects but who doesn't try to impose and change much with him.

Lomachenko teaches in the same manner that Kovalev was brought up in boxing. The Russian school (or w/e you want to cal it) is very distinct, and Kovalev would feel at home. Add to that the fact that Kova would likely have respect for Lomachenko, it might be a good combo.

I remember watching some old Klitschko training segments and all i could think was how we did the exact same things in our gym. 20 some years later...
