aside from the fact that cintron clearly wasnt headbutted in the 7th and was down for the count...

listen to what ole howard says as the 7th is starting about martinez and what cintron needed to do. that pretty much sums it up. "take one step to the left and pop him." when kelly does that, it will end the fight.

this is in no way a knock on sergio. he is a scrappy, slick guy but good lord he is not an atg and this aint at lhw. martinez has fought the same way for virtually his entire career. he keeps his hands low, bounces around, darts in quickly with a straight lead left, exposing his face and and tries to get off before bouncing out. when sergio was at his freshest in the beginning of both the margo and the willams fight, he was dropped. so its not even like he has to be taken into deep water before his flaws are exosed. everyone says the margo fight was so long ago it can't possibly be used to support any argument against sergio winning...

well...i say watch the fight, then watch the williams fight. sergio essentially does the same things and these fights are damn near 10 years apart. he's bigger and stronger than he was against margo but his habits really havent changed all that much. its who he is. he is not w/o flaws himself and he's shown this his whole career. if come forward pressure/volume fighters don't stand a chance against sergio he would have beat margo and beat williams. both margo and williams get hit as much as kelly. but he didnt. he showed the same habits in both fights, and was worn down in both fights by pressure and found himself on the ropes a helluva lot more than a slick technician should.

everyone here knows kelly's flaws. the man gets hit and he's gonna get hit a lot against sergio. everyone's seen the hopkins fight and there are threads that go on for days about kelly's flaws and how all sergio has to do is show up and he's gonna be the new mw champ.

well don't look past sergio's flaws. they are very evident to anyone willing to look. who's flaws will prove to be fatal is the real question here folks. kelly's flaws will be evidence but won't be fatal while sergios flaws will be evident and will be the reason he ultimately gets stopped.

    :patriot rant over

Gotta pick that nit with ya. I don't think Sergio was hurt at all. I think it was more balance. Now that the fight is signed I'll probably go back and watch it a few times. groan....

well the 1st round kd against margo was sergio acutally in the ropes which was scored a kd and no he wasnt hurt against williams.

the point was the man isnt w/o flaws and even when he's at his freshest he still is open to being dropped. whether he's hurt or whether his balance is off. either way it aint like he needs to be worn down before he starts getting sloppy. he doesnt go from bernard hopkins to worn down mess over the course of a fight. he is open from the opening bell.

This is essentially the same thing I keep trying to point out. Sergio Martinez has a bunch of flaws, and they are the wrong kind of flaws to out slick Pavlik.

Cintron and Williams failed to keep Martinez on the ropes because they both suck at cutting off the ring. Kelly Pavlik wins most of his fights by CUTTING OFF THE RING.

in the cintron fight, there was a flagpole coming out of the center of the ring and up cintron's ass and all he did was rotate. howard was pretty much laughing at cintron. cintron got off that flagpole when he was caught with a "headbutt" and back into the ropes before taking a couple knees.

wonder what was going through his head when he saw his own reaction on tape and saw that it wasnt a headbutt :think that's pretty embarrasing

sergio won that fight...what a robbery

I think Pavlik will beat him quite well and quite impressively. Martinez is going to have a hard time keeping Pavlik off him after a few rounds. He might look good for a couple of rounds but the pace always has to drop. When his movement declines Pavlik is going to punish him, I don't think Martinez has top durability, certainly not against a big middleweight puncher.

There is no way Martinez gets destroyed here. No chance.

exactly. plus he's gonna have to really try to avoid going straight back and sitting right on the end of kelly's punches. he was doing this the entire fight against williams and if williams had any power, he probably would have knocked him out. i was absolutely amazed to see the lack of damage on martinez's face after the williams fight. he really didn't even look like he'd been in a fight at all.

Of course, let's not forget that Espino said Kelly's punches don't hurt. Of course he had to take a couple of knees to think about it.........

It's called riding-a-punch. Legitimate defensive tactic. He seemed to have gauged Williams' range moderately well (still ate a few) by about the third round. By the time many of them made contact it was right at the end of the punch's range: not much power left in them.

I don't think Martinez is going to have it easy, and he could definitely get sparked, but some of you are grasping too hard at straws, IMO.

i understand the tactic, however in the mid and later rounds the tactic was not working well due to fatigue. you get the most power out of a punch when you land on the end of it. martinez is going to have to be the best "punch rider" in the world to not feel pavlik's power at the end of his shots.
