In the end, the commission unanimously approved the appointment of New Jersey referee Benjy Esteves Jr. and judges Dave Moretti of Las Vegas, New Jersey's Steve Weisfeld and Glenn Feldman of Connecticut.
Surprised they didn't go with Bayless again, he had a fairly quiet and non-controversial night. Saying that, they didn't need breaking up or anything very often.
Just read this from fat Dan The referee pool originally included Kenny Bayless, who was the third man in the ring for the first Golovkin-Alvarez fight and is widely considered the best referee in the world. Bennett planned to appoint him to work the rematch as well. However, on Tuesday night, Bayless was removed from the pool because he informed Bennett that he would not be available on Sept. 15 due to personal reasons.
They won't in the rematch either. Both are very clean fighters inside the ring, so why not get a cheaper ref?
Why announce the ref and judges this far out? To me it just gives the wrong people a chance to intervene and get on these officials to influence them.
Pretty pathetic that the NSAC cowed to Abel Sanchez's whining and kept Tony Weeks off the assignment. Weeks is one of the top Nevada refs. Esteves is excellent too, but they shouldn't have had to bring in a NY ref to appease Sanchez and Golovkin.
Probably because the last fight he had with two elite level fighters, he completely ****ed it up and ruined the fight.
LOL Bayliss doesnt want to touch that fight with somebody elses. He knows this could turn out to be the fishiest fight of all time.
And as I understand Weeks and Sanchez aren't the best of pals. I'm surpised and relieved they didn't go "all Nevada" again with the officials.
