He went straight to heavy weight after amateurs for the money. He was 165 champ before going pro. I did not see him tonight, but he is doing what he should have done a few years ago. He also could have alternated between cruiser and heavyweight during career, but for some reason did not. Probably felt if he was going to take fights, it would only be for bigger purses. Can't blame a guy for that.
Byrd is used to fighting bigger fighters whom he enjoys a significant speed and defense advantage over. It should be interesting seeing how he copes with speedy light heavyweights, especially at his advanced age.
Byrd was all over Roy - "two former heavyweight champ at LHW" Looks like he wants to cash in on the novelty.
I think when it's all said and done the LHW career should have come first. You don't want to be in the smaller weight division at an advanced age. As you get older naturally you want to be in higher weight classes where your diminished speed and reflexes won't show. One thing I look for to be evident in his new direction is power! Amazingly I think we could see almost a role reversal here for Byrd if done right. If he approaches LHW by sitting down on his punches and focusing on timing, he'd have a killer southpaw attack. The fact that he has dropped some heavyweights and had the giants at times stunned tells me he'd pack a solid punch at 175. I for one am very interested in seeing how he does.
