I was stunned. usually when I watch a big fight I'm quite loud shoutin at the tele gettin, getting a bit rowdy! but with this one it was a stunned almost silence. During the earlier rounds I was amazed at Cotto's boxing masterclass, even showing some pernell whitaker like evasion at the end of one round! Then all of a sudden something was up with cotto and something was bothering him. In the 11th I thought It looked like hell for Cotto in there, blood in nose, blood in mouth, taking body shots. Then hell took its toll as Cotto began taking knees and the rest is history. I don't love cotto or anythin, didn't even want him to win! but as Cotto was getting beat up in the 11th I felt a flush of adrenaline from my heart, think I felt sorry for the kid!

Anyone else feel a similar stunned awe as the fight was unfolding?

Yes this was a brilliant classic battle between two outstanding boxers (albeit for very different reasons). I sensed very early, possibly by the 3rd round, that Cotto was in trouble and it was only a matter of IF Cotto would make it to the end rather than getting stopped. Margarito's chin should never be underestimated again. The man was relentless coming forward and easily soaked up everything that Cotto landed. The problem was that Cotto, while showing brilliant boxing skills and dazzling footwork, never had enough power to stop Margarito from coming forward.

Seeing a bloodied, totally battered, Cotto was quite a sight as he was starting to have an air of indestructibility; and it was hard to ever imagine him getting brutally battered to defeat like that.

aye, another thought that I just remembered after the fight was stopped, when it shown cottos wife and kid crying. imagine getting the **** beaten out of you and seeing your wife and child crying ringside? I hope he didn't see or hear that during the fight, pure hell. Cotto deserves a big holiday!

Totally agree, although I never did see why you would want your family to watch you get chinned? If I had ever made it in boxing (I was a very average am fighter) I wouldn't let my family go anywhere near my fights! But maybe thats just me.

I always have a soft spot for any fighter that's lost and can imagine that it can be quite a life defining moment i.e. that there's always someone out there who will, one day, take your title. There was a shot of Cotto walking back to his dressing room alone and this pretty much summed it up for me... time for thought, reflection, face the family etc. (Also amazed at how he was able to walk back as if he'd just been to buy a paper!) I know these guys make a mint and they've probably dealt out enough career ending pain in their time; but no other sport can give you drama like this.

But what a fight and to lose in that fashion is really nothing to be ashamed of. Cotto had all the early skills but didn't have the power to finish his man; nor did he dent Margarito's fight plan - he just took whatever punishment was meted out and kept coming forward. This was simply a wonderful fight between two great fighters.

After it one of the American commentators said something about this being a win for the "grinders out there" and he was probably right. I was honestly amazed at the shots Margarito took... but took them he did - awesome fitness and a superb chin to boot.

In terms of a re-match, I can't see Cotto winning and the psychological advantage must be with Maragarito. For the winner, perhaps this fight was tailor made for someone who can soak up punishment and grind out a win. (I hope this doesn't catch up with Margarito in later life as he took a serious number of head shots in the first five rounds.) Well done to Setanata for bringing us this one!

Two days later and I still cannot believe Cotto got beat up so bad that he give in... And against Margarito!

Biggest shock for me since Tarver KO2 Roy Jones... Probably my two saddest days in boxing this century.

    :-(

I was shocked at the state of Cotto after the first knock down. His face was a bloody mess.
I expected him to lose, but not like that.

I think in years to come, my most vivid memory will be the sheer volume of excellent, flush hooks and uppercuts and straights snapping Margarito's head back...and him practically ignoring them.

Make no mistake, the form Cotto showed would've been good enough to wipe out almost anyone. But Margarito was possessed by the Mysterons or something, he was unstoppable.

He walked through some great shots from Cintron too. The guy is an animal and I cannot remember a more relentless assualt in a boxing ring. Cotto was totally outboxing him but was still unable to create space between his opponent and was constantly under pressure.

It seems Margarito still isn't getting much credit in terms of his ability despite the power and accuracy of what he hit Cotto with. He is a massively improved fighter these days and an absolute nightmare to fight. Exerting constant pressure without closing the gap so quickly as to instigate innordinate holding and mauling.

You have to feel sorry for Cotto, he put on a superb display of boxing on the back foot against a bigger opponent but was simply unable to keep Margarito off him. I loved every second of this fight.
