:| :| Contreras recovered quickly after an operation to relieve pressure on his brain shortly after the bout. Both fighters were cut and had gone to the hospital to be sewn up and while there in the same room with Johnny Vasquez he collapsed and was rushed to the operation. After he was brought out of the induced coma he got up too soon, and lapsed into another coma. He was operated on again, and was in very serious condition and close to death for several days. He finally did recover but it was after several weeks. Johnny Vasquez and a close friend of his kept a constant vigil on Isreal as he could not speak English and his family had to return to Venezuela. Johnny's friend returned to Venezuela with Isreal as a traveling companion, and to translate. While there he and Israels sister fell in love and later married.
