Inoue made 1.5 million vs Moloney and according to Ohashi will make more for his fight vs Butler. He also stated that his goal is to eventually have Inoue fight in the Tokyo Dome, normally reserved for baseball and football in Japan. The last time Tokyo Dome held a boxing match was Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas. It did however recently manage to sell out with a kickboxng match. (Tenshin vs Takeru, the former being one of the greatest kickboxers of all time, and the latter being the best opponent Tenshin could possibly fight within his career realistically)
That's crazy and just shows how divorced purses are from fight quality. They sprinkled the tiniest pinch of hype on Moloney, no audience, middle of Covid, on way late at night IIRC, and still bigger than either Donaire purse?
The crazy thing is that while Inoue made 1 million for the first Donaire fight, he only made 350,000 for the second.
Tyson made $5M in Japan against an opponent that there were no stipulations from the promoters on who they can pick. $5M might seem small for Tyson but he could have picked the taxi cab driver for his coke dealer and the fight would still have been made.
Love when boxing politics stay out the way of good fights. Inoue literally just fought and he’s already in world of scheduling his next fight for undisputed. Terence Crawford and Errol Spence need to get their heads outta their rear ends and get that fight done. History won’t be kind to either guy if they fumble this.
Do the Japanese not like rematches? I was pumped for the Donaire rematch. What they each made as a minimum was egregious.
