It's a shame, Kelly could have been a top guy still if he was more disciplined, I wonder if his career would have played out differently if he didnt jump up 10 pounds to fight Hopkins and take that loss. Taylor/Pavlik 1 is one of the best fights I've seen live.
You were in AC that night? So was I. And you know where we were that Sat. morning? On our last day of vacation in Maine. I almost didn't go to the fight because of that. But 2 weeks before the fight, I said sure I can drive home 7 hrs from Maine, take a short break at home & then back on the road 2 hrs to AC & I'm sure glad I did. Like you said, a great fight to see live. Damn near got sick in the 2nd round, but Kelly bounced back strong & we all know what happened in the 7th. On the HBO broadcast, right after Merchant says, "nobody likes to get hit", BAM a right hand from KP & a few seconds later a bigger harder right hand that drives Taylor into the corner. Only a few more seconds util it was over. Smoger (the Best) called it, no counting necessary. Great night. Lots of driving that day, but well worth it. The adrenaline was pumping that whole week in Maine thinking about what was coming when I got back to Jersey.
I saw a video of KP on his deck & this guy was doing something on a small pond a short distance away. Kelly fired the guy said WTF! It went right threw my arm! Poor Kelly, such a good fighter. He wasn't all that diversified, but what a great 1-2 he had.
