Clinches and faked low blows don't score points. Now, how did Hopkins with this?
I saw Calzaghe waving his hands about and taking some hard counters. Don't get me wrong, he won quite a few rounds that way, I just didn't think he did enough to win the fight.
Land those counters? It sure as hell wasn't the ref. Remember pro boxing is scored differently from amateur boxing. Anyway, whether you think Hopkins won or Calzaghe won, it was a very close fight. Only a fool would say otherwise. BBC Radio 5 thought Hopkins won, Steve Bunce on Setanta (massively biased towards Calzaghe) thought it was very close, The Ring had it a draw, Joe himself seemed to think it was close and his father thought he was losing with a round to go. Hopkins was 43 ****ing years old.
Effective aggression - Calzaghe landed over 100 more punches and at a higher percentage Defense - Calzghe, but then again it's pretty easy to defend when your opponent isn't throwing punches and just wants to hug Ring generalship - Calzaghe (Hopkins gave up in the mid rounds, he was faking low blows, because he didn't want to be there).
actually winning an SD against a shot fighter when coming off one of your best performances ever is generally considered evidence that he would beat you in his prime
Hopkins was a better fighter at his peak than Calzaghe, most would agree. The size advantage that Calzaghe had is not enough to turn the tables on Hopkins, in my view. Hopkins would have beaten Calzaghe if the fight had taken place three years earlier, nevermind prime for prime, I think.
he was shot bro. Its not about what you're accomplishing its about what you look like in the ring compared to how you looked in your prime. Even in the Tarver fight, which was a great victory, Hopkins looked kind of sluggish, just not as much as Slow-Mo Antonio. Tarver was garbage in that fight.
