Age, old age...no matter how fit, it's age and the lack of reflex...I've said that for a very long time.....look at Tennis out side of a Connors, Agussi and MacEnrow (35 and gone) all the greats are gone at 32. They have to fight the young wolves every week...They can not pick and chose other old names. Actually at age 18 your reflex starts declining, and by 32 has declined enough that lesser are now better....Style makes the fight, and old age removes that half an eye blink that seperates the good from the very good....and teh very good become ordinary..... we have had a couple of decades where the old guys fought old guys and no one noticed they were now slow..... in the old days of BC....Before Color TV, Before Computer....I was told as a kid, back in the deep talllent pool days, a lighter weight was old at 28, a middle at 30 and a Heavy at 32... and some one 40 was and is not capable except by Lucky Punch Forman, of doing much....and Forman lost to Schulz in reality....a no more than middle quality contender but was given the robbery. Joe Louis said...."When I was young the opening appeared and I hit them, when I was old, the opening appeared and I said hit them, and my hand didn't move.....age 36/7. Delusion of expecting Holy to do something than get beat up.... No one comes back to baseball at age 50....fourty is that age for boxers. The only athlete that could play at that age was Ice Hocky mean man Gordi Howe, and Geroge Blanda who was basicly the field goal kicker and third string quarterback. I expect Mosley to lose because at 36 he's old, Catto is 28/9?.
Yeah, Bo Bo, good post!:good How about Joe Calzaghe, though? Do you think he is too old at 35 to fight another 2-3 fights? Is he too old to fight the prime Kessler?
Good post Bo bo. A few things have changed though: In the olden days, fighters had to fight very often, sometimes monthly. Louis fought very often, Greb had over 200 fights.... this takes its tall on the body and when they hit 30 they're usually done. Nowadays, once a fighter is established as a contender/belt holder/name fighter, they usually fight no more than 4 times a year, so they can have some good years in their 30's, but past-35 is still very dangerous territory.... however it's not always a rule..... McCline at 37 almost looked younger than Peter (who is 28?) last week.
Hopkins loses to anyone. Mosley is losing to Cotto. Don't doubt that. Calzaghe, his immense skill will at least keep him competitive when he loses to Kessler, but age will have the final say.
Hopkins just beat Wright and Tarver, try again. I know you think Calzaghe is amazing and everything, but will you say when he gets his ass handed to him by Kessler. If I was a Calzaghe fan I would be pretty nervous watching this fight, this is the first time Calzaghe is fighting someone that is actually a good fighter, if he losses I see him going down in history as another over protected euro that got beat when he stepped up to real competition.
How old were Wright and Tarver? Tarver has gone on to...Wright... what weight does he fight at again? Why are so many people incapable of thinking?
Both Wright and Tarver are younger than Hopkins, and he had 2 controversial battles with a good fighter in Taylor. Is it because you have something against Hopkins you continue to put him down so much, or is it because he accomplished more in 5 years than Calzaghe did in his whole career.
I agree with most of your post. One caveat, however, you don't need to have great (or even good) reflexes to hit Cotto.
You get slower everyday, but it depends of the level of your opponents. Of course Mosley does not have the same speed than 5 years ago. But what is the current level of speed between Cotto and Mosley. Who's got the upper hand ? A holder Hopkins beat a younger Trinidad because he still was faster than Trinidad no matter his age. Maybe the same will happen in that fight.
Are you suggesting I picked the winner on age alone? Age is of course a factor, but it need to be combined with style and skill and the different rates at which fighters age. Tarver was not up to much. Wright was not up to much at 170 especially. It is as simple as that mate.
