I don't think fighters in the future will ever get overly romantized like the fighters from the 70s to the 90s are.

Like, it's hard to ever have a conversation about modern fighters without someone bringing up Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali or some other Americans from those periods and saying it's not as good an era or they wouldn't beat them blah blah.

I'd imagine in 30-40 years time Oleksandr Usyk will be respected, but not rammed into every single conversation like a Tyson, Ali.

Every generation of fighters trashes the new generation. Back in the 20s and 30s you had the old timers bashing the current generation insisting they couldn't fight and would never survive the bare-knuckle era. Some generations have a more valid claim than others. The Duran/Leonard era can certainly make an argument that their generation was far greater than current or recent decades.

I believe the smaller fighters of today have a much better case in this argument then the guys MW and above.

And by today I mean like 2010 not literally today.

What has Fury done outside beating Wlad? Not a lot I can see. You don't become a great by beating only 3 ranked opponents.

Brewster beat 2, Mike Tyson beat around 10. Furys a lot closer to Brewster

Why would Lewis duck Byrd and Ruiz? H3 could destroy either.

Lewis knew he only had a few fights left in his career and neither of those guys would generate much money. Even his detractors knew Lewis could beat them, but they were disappointed to see the unified title split back up.

Not even Usyk will. What nobody realizes is it wouldn't be difficult for the next era of heavyweights to be greater and more popular than this one, especially because there are more boxing fans now compared to 2017. All they have to do is fight eachother more and frequently. There are already a bunch of online lunatics saying Itauma could be better than Ali and Lewis

If the next generation ends up being more exciting than the Wilder/Fury/Joshua/Usyk era then this era won't receive the same nostalgia based retrospection as past eras. They might actually call it weak for decades to come.

We saw how Dubois defeated Joshua and Hrgovic, what happens if Dubois gets destroyed by a bunch of up and coming prospects or other contenders from this era that Usyk/Wilder/Fury/Joshua never fought ? That would be a terrible look for this generation and it's a realistic scenario

nah, if an Era produced dozens of busy active Great Top & Noted fighters meeting near everyone they could get too, avoiding none or very few and providing true & honest competition Win or Lose, how then can they be overrated - they DID it, it's done, recorded history.

if fighters Don't Fight, avoid everybody, fight DOWN 2 & 3 Divisions lighter than their walk around weight and just play at boxing but excel at Hype, Showcasing Media and B.S, well who the hell wants to Credit that, never mind remember them.

    they ARE the Overrated Ones!!!
