It is a different sport now a days. Fighters have better training and diet. Fighters like Rosenbloom and Greb took fights on to supplement their training, that simply does not happen now a days, amongst world class fighters.

Slightly OT, but with some relevance, I think toughness is also culturally related as well. Reading Max Hasting's book on World War II, it was interesting to note, that in even number battles, Germany wiped the floor with all the Allies, it took massive reinforcements of men, before the Allies started to dominate.

This was thought because although the Allied forces were brave (some, to the point of stupidity), they lacked the mental toughness to make important decisions in the heat of the battle, which the Germans were very good at...

Okay, I'll have to be the one to say it. The numerous man-made sources of electromagnetic frequencies have made us all weaker over time. Why, my own sperm count has dropped rather dramatically since 1981, for instance. I attribute much of this to cell phone towers and public endorsements of homosexuality and taking the iodine out of the bread. ...What were we talking about? I'm very sleepy. HAARP has been controlling my sleeping patterns...or trying. They don't think I know, but I know. ...I know.

let me put it this way. When SRR lost to LaMotta, he never offered up any excuses and wanted a rematch made immediately. Not only that, he didnt even check out of his hotel and fought him 3 weeks later. oh, and he found time in between to fight top rated jackie wilson, another 10-rounder.

yep, i know which way im voting

Business wise this would be impossibly today, so it's a moot point

The Spartans? They had the life of an international playboy compared to the cavemen. Them lads had to fight tyrannusauras Rex's just to EAT. Plus they had all those ropey looking women who they had to be prepared to beat a fellow suitor to death with a rock, to get a sniff at. Sniff being an appropriate word as in sure they stank to high heaven of **** and stuff

Today's fighter wouldn't be able to go for an instant rematch if they wanted to so it has nothing to do with their toughness, hence it's a moot point

They wouldn't be able to arrange the TV dates or venue. Yes they could fight for small change, but Robinson himself wouldn't do that and pulled out of fights because he wasn't happy with the money (Cocoa Kid, Archie Moore)

I could say Emmanuel Augustus is tougher than Ray Robinson because EA never turned down a fight, were as Robinson backed out of fights with Cocoa Kid and Charles Burley. I would ofcourse being argumentitive for the sake of it :D

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I say the answer is that it is a mixed bag. Some fighters today could never make it in the old days. Some would thrive. Just depends on the individual. Hell, there are champions today who would not be champions back in the day, and guys today who will never be a champ but who under the old school system would have been world champions. On the whole though, I say they were tougher back then simply because they had to be. The fights were longer, there were more fighters, and more fights. But there are guys in the modern era who could deal with that if they had to do so, and many who could not.

so sick of hearing about modern methods. where's the evidence they are better? cause they run on a treadmill and lift weights? they do plyometrics and stero.... er modern nutrition. I'm reminded of this after watching one of these super trained athletes huffing and puffing in round 6

you make a good point here:good How often have we heard the term 'throwback' used to describe a certain type of fighter? Plus theres plenty journeymen, the guys who are the glue of boxing, who fight as often as they can, and i dont mean going in and lasting a round or 2, but who try to go the distance so they can get another payday without having to wait 28 days after a stoppage/KO.
