On older films, most of the guys who fought in the early 1900's look a lot better a decade later. They did not improve much, the film quality did. Black and white film often runs slow, and many of the films are grainy.

It's like taking a person with poor eyesight, taking away his glasses, then asking him how a Picasso or Van Gogh looks from 30 feet away.
