Diets are managed and injuries treated in exactly the same way now as in the 1930s? Sorry, just simply... wrong. Staggeringly wrong, in fact....

You think medicine has not progressed since 1930? Same for nutrition? In fact as recently as the 1990s, ACL injuries, for example, would finish the career of most sportsmen, now most recover all their athletic ability. So you don't even have to go that far back. Kell Brook's broken eye socket? You think that could have been repaired as effectively in 1930 as it was after his fight with GGG?

The nutritional science behind modern effective weight-making didn't even exist 60 years ago. Even the vast range of food products available to athletes today would not have been common place in many countries. Or the legal supplements which are central to an athlete's diet in 2016. Nor the specialised food preparation services which aid athletes to fuel their body correctly.

And all of the above is referencing the development in only first world countries. What about the third world nations of the 1930s which are now strong in boxing but back then wouldn't have had access to the best medicine of the day? How do you think these aspects have evolved for them?

There's a lot wrong about it....

Imagine getting in a time machine and going back to a doctor in the 1930s and asking for key-hole surgery on an elbow, or a knee reconstruction procedure? Lol.

I'll concede it's possible sparring and training hasn't changed in method too much, but the ancillaries to these such as medicine, diet etc have evolved massively and have transformed athletic endeavor.

It's hard to assess this in a sport like boxing which isn't measured in time or distance but did the sprinters of the 1930s run the 100m in under 10 seconds or the high jumpers clear 2 meters? That's partly down to PEDs of course, but not entirely.

Ali at 201-205 pounds looks fast but then you have to compare him against modern cruisers instead.

So Dont be fooled by this:

There are 8mm films of those fights floating around.

Quit BSing and using those fights as example cuz you think you cant be disproved.

And why does som people always say: BOXING CAN'T BE COMPARED TO OTHER SPORTS!!!!!!
Like boxing can't evolve? The old timers will alway be best?

The new guys are getting better all the time

I still think it's case by case.

No one can convince me any of today's LW fighters could beat Benny Leonard whilst weighing 135 pounds.

Of course it evolves, but the basics stay the same. A well trained boxer from any era with a granite chin and massive punch will always be a factor in modern day boxing as well. Certainly now when there's better drugtesting and it's harder for chemically enhanced fighters to prevent being detected, oldies (not many of the late 80's and 90's ones obviously) would perform pretty well I believe.

Modern medicine and nutrition (along with modern PEDs) allow the fighters to prolong their careers and their prime. This results in more valuable experience of a veteran while preserving the physical characteristics of a man in his 20s.

That's why guys like Hopkins exist now and you'll see even more of that in the future.
