That doesn't mean anything. Watch the footage. We're not talking about running around a track, we're looking at the speed of a punch. Usain Bolt is the fastest man to ever live. Does that mean that Ali wouldn't be considered fast today, because it's been 50 years since he showed his speed against Cleveland Williams?
Boxing cannot ever be compared to other sports. Other sports progress each decade. Boxing doesn't. Sure, some of today's top guys are better than guys of the past. But likewise, some guys of the past are better than guys of today. Any knowledgeable boxing fan knows this. The new guys aren't getting better all of the time. Otherwise, the best guys of today would be significantly better than the best guys of the 80's and 90's etc. Yet that's clearly not the case.
Please point me to the smooth HD footage of Marciano vs Charles, Louis, and Walcott that proves otherwise. Also back then anything above 190 was heavyweight. I also stated in my original comment that I would pick Marciano, but that it was within the realm of possibility that Stevenson could beat him.
YouTube is your friend here. Has Stevenson ever fought anyone above 190? Anything is possible. This is not probable.
A couple of his opponents might have come in 190+ at fightnight. And Marciano was a very small/light Heavyweight...
Would any of these 190 pound opponents be favoured over Jersey Joe Walcott or Joe Louis? Rocky was a 180 pound fighter. He could easily make LHW or could add to CW, either way he steamrools Stevenson.
There was no CW back then. HW was everything above 175. Of course Marciano would walk Stevenson down and pimpslap him out cold, but I only mentioned it because Marciano wasn't even a 190 fighter himself as far as I know.
PEDs? These ol' timers were probably on all sorts! Drugs were waaaay easier to get hold of back in the mid 20th century! Just wander down the chemist and get the purest chemical whatever-u-like Sir. You think roids and hgh make you more formidable than some speed/phet/coke? Different eras are simply incomparable.
Too often people dismiss Marciano because he's too small for the current HW division. But as a p4p talent, very few, if man weighing 180 pounds would defeat him come fight night.
So out of 33 Olympic sports, boxing is the only one which has NOT progressed in the last 100 years? That makes absolutely no sense.
For Loudon: https://www.ted.com/talks/david_eps...ly_getting_faster_better_stronger?language=en "Many factors are at play in shattering athletic records, and the development of our natural talents is just one of them."
Marciano might kill Stevenson. Anybody who thinks Stevenson knocks out Marciano easily is a fvcking idiot. Dempsey would steamroll Kovalev. Absolutely destroy him.
It has obviously progressed from the M.O.Q. But it obviously doesn't progress in the same way that other sports do. Some sports progress every decade. The swimmers and sprinters today are faster than they were 10-20 years ago. Records are broken all the time. Boxing is completely different. The best boxers of today across all weight classes are not significantly/noticeably better than the best guys of the 80's and 90's, from 20-30 years ago. A sprinter from the 80's couldn't compete today, whereas you could bet your house on some guys from the 80's beating some of today's top guys. That's the difference. Sports science, training equipment and nutrition etc, can all aid a fighter. But he still has to master the art of boxing. You can have a personal chef, a masseuse, and a pair of $200 running shoes. It doesn't automatically mean that your balance and timing are going to be superior to a fighter from 30 years ago. Don't ever compare boxing with any other sport.
