Whose legacy do you think could have potentially been enhanced by campaigning at a half-weight above/below 160, if the option was there for them? I'm not just enquiring about the badasses that moved up regardless (Fitz, Conn, etc)... More those who may have been lethal IF they had that half-stone cushion? Up to 168 rather than all the way to LHW or HW? Down to 154 to better suit their body? I think Choynski or Ketchel had beastly potential at 168... I think Robinson and Burley would have been the greatest 154lb boxers ever...
*I consider SRR the best Welter anyway, obviously... just also think he would be number 1 at 154lb, too.
Griffith didn't really have weight problems until he went up to Middleweight and had to go back down, he was probably fine with what he had.
Marvin Johnson probably could've boiled down to 168, he was a very small LHW. Lloyd Marshall was at his best around 165, give him SMW and he rules it with an iron fist.
Fair point, to be fair there’s a whole heap of great Welter/Middles that we could bung into that 154 category, not too sure why I didn’t read the original post and put Ike Williams in their lool.
Yeah, Marshall was kind of an inspiration for this thread... I was working on a top 50 MW, and couldn't put my finger on my I had him lower than I should.
If they both had to weigh in at anywhere they like up to 168lb.... let's say 12hrs prior... In your opinion, does Marshall beat the top career middleweights? (Hagler, Monzon, etc)
Personally, I'd rate him top 20 at LHW, but I'd say he's around the same mark at MW. Holman Williams is definitely greater imo.
Lists are tricky. And as much as I try, at any weight, I can't get over my bias towards my favourite fighters (Choynski, Liston, Ketchel, Wilde), haha
I'm a big fan of Ketchel, but I find him so overrated I don't even think he's a top 10 MW. You can see how that is unpopular.
If asked to weigh in anywhere up to 154lb, 12 hrs before the fight (15 rounds): Robinson Burley Hearns Walker Gavilan Griffith Ketchel Fitzsimmons T Ryan Langford
