Were there any fighters from the old days that used weight training in order to get stronger for fight?

    or was it just calisthenics?

Are you sure about Moore lifting weights ? He would do fingertip pushups
every day he claimed ,thus giving him those bulging biceps. Weightlifting was frowned upon by the old-time trainers as it restricted natural handspeed and dexterity..

carnera was a strongman before his boxing turn so you would think that he was a lifter as well.

in most sports lifting weight wasn't common place was it pre50's?

Yeah, if you count the pulley system then a lot of guys. Dempsey.

What's more interesting is that the most explosive fighters of the more modern era didn't - guys like Lopez, Tyson (early career) and Jones hardly went near them.

Heavy bag and pulleys are all resistive training.

My thought is that most old timers got strength training of all kinds done through mostly strongman work. Carrying and lifting heavy objects, hammer and tire, wood and axe, rowing machines etc

His rival Harold Johnson wasn't one for lifting weights despite his physique:

Much of Moore's work to develop his physique was done in a more traditional way though:

    -Archie Moore

    -Earnie Shavers

  15. Aside from the pulley systems not much. I do recall reading about how sullivan was trained by a wrestling champ of his day (murdoc or something?). And he had sullivan shadow boxing with various weight dumbbells...but still that really isn't what most would consider weight training. Lots of pull ups push ups chin ups and heavy medicine ball work, doesnt seem to be much with weights until the 80's. And even now its not as usual as many think. As mentioned Tyson didn't touch them...and I am under the understanding that Stewart limits it or even doesnt allow it. And really even many of the modern conditioning guys are getting away from weights (like mannys pacs guy, azir or whatever his name is) and doing more "modern" explosive sports specific polymetrics, which is often just old school stuff given modern scientific names. I think the whole "modern fighters lift and hence are better" is a example of a modern faillicy.
