'Very few pugilists train alike, simply because one man may be working to take off weight, while another may be working to put it on. When I am preparing for a contest, I rise early, and take a walk of ten miles, quickening the pace upon the last two miles, and come home in a fast run. My trainers rub me down with Turkish towels, and then apply a wash of alchohol and, witch hazel. My diet is mutton chops, or broiled steak, well done, eggs, and a glass of Bass ale now and then. It is absolutely necessary to abstain from coffee and tea, as those drinks will make a person nervous and unfit for a hard struggle. The walk is followed by an hour's exercise at the punching bag, with one minute rests after each three minutes of work, when the rubbing down process is gone through with again, followed by dinner, after which I rest until three o'clock. Then follows a twenty mile run, which concludes the work for the day.' - George Dixon
